Daily D – Psalm 143:10
Psalm 143:10
“Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
lead me on level ground.” (NIV)
“Teach me to do what pleases you,
for you are my God.
May your kind presence
lead me into a level land.” (NET)
“Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
May your gracious Spirit
lead me forward on a firm footing.” (NLT)
—
Here’s a good prayer to pray: “Teach me to do your will.” An alternative version says, “Teach me to do what pleases you.”
These sentence prayers should be part of our normal routine.
– When we arise in the morning and spend time alone with God, these prayers should be on our lips.
– When we attend a Bible study or listen to a sermon in worship, we should pray this kind of prayer.
– When we sit in the evening with our Bibles in our laps, as we prepare for our evening rest, these are the kinds of prayers that serve us best.
These are the kinds of prayers God loves to answer. He answers them immediately, he answers them over time, and he answers them through ever greater perspective gained through personal experience and further instruction.
God is described as good, kind, and gracious here in these different translations. These words describe how he relates to us, how he teaches us, and how he guides us.
God is good, God is kind, and God is gracious. His instruction is good, kind, and gracious. As he shapes us to be more like him, we reflect more of his good, kind, and gracious demeanor and manner.
People who gain knowledge for knowledge’s sake tend to get all puffed up about it. People who become more like our Father in Heaven become people who build up others.
May we today become more like our Father in Heaven: good, kind, and gracious. May we become like him in building up others.
—
I will seek to hear and obey God’s words of wisdom that make me ever more like him.
—
Our Father, teach me to do your will. Lead me by your Holy Spirit, day by day, moment by moment, thought by thought, and word by word. Amen.
A Note: I use the dictation app Wispr Flow to write these devotionals. This is a wonderful tool. However, it has not yet learned to use a capital G or a lowercase g when referring to God. Sometimes it gets it right. Sometimes it does not. I tell you this only because I don’t want you to think I’m psychotic. I’m confident the app will learn after repeated use. Until then, smile and know that I am not that great of a grammar and syntax failure.
