Daily D – Psalm 18:10
Psalm 18:10
He mounted the cherubim and flew;
he soared on the wings of the wind. (NIV)
Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew,
soaring on the wings of the wind. (NLT)

Just about every time I fly, I think of these words: “soaring on the wings of the wind.”
There’s an old Delta Airlines commercial that says, “We love to fly, and it shows.” Today, we will fly to our vacation destination. Two of our three granddaughters will accompany us, along with their parents. The older of the two is about to have her fourth birthday. She has flown to Hawaii twice. She has flown to Mexico. She has flown to Florida. And today she will fly the farthest north she has ever ventured.
Her favorite place to fly is Utah. To her, Utah always means snow. When she dreams of flying somewhere, it’s to Utah. When she sees a jet overhead, she asks if they’re going to Utah. When she dreams about taking a business trip like her daddy, it’s to Utah. She loves Utah.
Today, we’re flying to Michigan. She’s excited about Michigan. What she knows about Michigan is that we will swim every day. She knows we’re going on a boat to an island. She also knows that we’re going to eat a lot of black cherries. I can’t wait to fill in the details.
Her little sister is a world traveler as well. She likewise has earned her wings. This wee child enjoys wherever she is. She makes every location a party. She cannot help but smile and laugh. And when she gets tired, she says the magic words “night, night,” takes you to her bedroom, turns on the sound machine, and joyfully jumps into her sleep sack.
This is going to be an amazing week!
We are going to enjoy the cooler weather. We’re going to lounge by the lakes. We’re going to eat fudge on Mackinac Island. (IYKYK)
Forty-three years ago this summer, my summer missions partner and I started a church in the small town of Boyne City. We will revisit this and other small towns where we spent time that summer. I’m confident a whole lot has changed in 43 years. The biggest thing that has changed is me.
I spent that whole summer battling chronic bronchitis. I got sick with acute bronchitis a few days before we left. I never got better until I returned home at the end of summer. God used that summer to speak deep truths into my life that have shaped me all these years.
I’m going back to the place where God showed me so much of what my life would be like. Now I’m going to relive those memories and so many more that have come along since. I’m also open to whatever God’s direction is for what’s next.
My eighty-three-year-old mentor grew up not far from the small town where we started that church. I plan to take a picture of the town’s sign and send it to him. He’s pretty excited that I’m going to his old hometown.
Memories, emotions, and relationships are all working their way through my heart and mind today and, most certainly, this week.
It’s time to get ready to get on the road so that we can soar on the wings of the wind.
Aren’t you glad our God is the God of The Great Adventure?

I will soar on the wings of the wind and delight in the journey of my life.

Our Father, thank you for the many wonderful ways you have shaped me, guided me, empowered me, and used me. Here I am. Send me. Here we are. Give us laughter. Here we go. Please go with us. Thank you that I’ve never been anywhere that you are not, and thank you that I never will be. You make every moment an adventure. Amen.
