Exodus 22:21-24 
“Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt. 

“Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.” (NIV)

Vulnerable people live among us: widows, orphans, and foreigners. God wants us to protect and provide for them. His anger is kindled when we do not take care of them. Listen to what he says about those who mistreat the vulnerable:

* My anger will be aroused.
* I will kill you.
* Your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

Um, it sounds like God is pretty serious about this. It sounds like we should be serious about it, too. 

Unfortunately for everyone concerned, our politicians have made these issues political footballs. They stoke rage from their opposite sides of the issues. That rage results in major contributions. Neither side wants to solve this issue because of the powerful wedge it is with their constituents. 

It is possible to manage and solve these problems. Whatever side we approach these issues from, we should join God in seeking the highest and best for every widow, orphan, and foreigner. We should not settle for inflammatory rhetoric and the mistreatment of anyone in these categories. 

Here’s the big question you and I need to answer in the most positive manner possible: What will I do to bring God’s grace and justice to this difficult issue? 

Whatever political side we are on, let us make sure we are on God’s side in issues affecting the vulnerable among us.

Our Father, empower me to see vulnerable people through your eyes. Show me how to join you in seeking their highest and best. Give our elected and appointed officials the wisdom and character necessary to solve these issues in a manner that honors you and serves everyone. Amen.
