Acts 10:24-26
They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends. As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter pulled him up and said, “Stand up! I’m a human being just like you!” (NLT)

The minute Peter came through the door, Cornelius was up on his feet greeting him—and then down on his face worshiping him! (The Message)

Peter was kind of important. He said and did a lot of impressive things. He also failed publicly and repeatedly. This may sound like your story. Success makes us feel good. Failure keeps us humble.

Having walked with Jesus for three years, Peter knew who he was in Christ, and likewise, who he was not. These truths are important for each of us.

Beware anyone, preacher or pewsitter, who acts a little more holy than thou. Those who enjoy public and personal acclaim for their religiosity too much are on dangerous ground.

Peter shows us the right way to think about ourselves. For example, do not receive adulation belonging to God alone. While appreciation is fine and welcome, worship is never something to receive from others.

Never forget how human you are. Divine revelation was required to get Peter into Cornelius’s house in the first place. Until then, Peter’s standards were a little higher than those of Jesus.

Always remember that, no matter how good you are, Jesus died for your sins, too. Gentile Cornelius and Jewish Peter both required salvation from the consequences of their sins.

Take delight in how God loves everyone and wants everyone to know and love him. Become his ambassador. Introduce men and women, boys and girls, from every tribe, tongue, and nation to Jesus.

I will remember who I am in relation to Jesus, and I will invite others to know him in the same way I do.

Our Father, please forgive me for thinking more of myself than I ought. Please forgive me for thinking I deserve praise that rightly belongs to you alone. Empower me to help others come to know you as I do. Amen.
