Zechariah 10:2
Household gods give worthless advice,
fortune-tellers predict only lies,
and interpreters of dreams pronounce
falsehoods that give no comfort.
So my people are wandering like lost sheep;
they are attacked because they have no shepherd. (NLT)

“Store-bought gods babble gibberish.
Religious experts spout rubbish.
They pontificate hot air.
Their prescriptions are nothing but smoke.
And so the people wander like lost sheep,
poor lost sheep without a shepherd.
I’m furious with the so-called shepherds.
They’re worse than billy goats, and I’ll treat them like goats.” (MSG)

It’s Baby Granddaughter Day, which is one of the best kinds of days. Big Sister, parents, and grandmothers are playing in the water while we eat, sleep, and repeat.

Tiny Baby has lost her pacifier again. She is quite upset. She doesn’t exactly say so, but her cries accurately indicate her mood.

Store-bought gods are like tiny babies. They babble and cry and make a regular fuss. They burp with gusto while dining, and offer interesting surprises during seasons of change.

Honestly, I don’t want a god like that.

I don’t want a god that whines. No gods that babble and cry. No gods with bad manners and worse hygeine.

I don’t want a god I have to appease with distractions and treats.

I don’t want a god who can’t stand on his own two feet.

Our Baby Granddaughter is perhaps the best baby in the whole wide world at this moment in history. You will have an impossible task if you try to convince me otherwise. She makes me want to take care of everything for her. I happily do so. Soon enough, she will take care of more and more things for herself. This is as it should be.

She will grow up, become ever more amazing, and live a full and meaningful life. She will learn what it means to depend on God, to trust God from the bottom of her heart, and to work together with God to build a better world. She will learn that God is God, and nothing else comes close in comparison.

This is a good day.

I think I will join our fair, tiny baby with a nap. We require rest for our next meal and nap. It’s a tough day, but we are ready to get on with it. We’ll trust God to take care of all the details while we dream.

I will worship God who created tiny babies, and not gods who act like tiny babies.

Our Father, thank you for babies. I’m not sure what you did to make us love them so, but thank you. Thank you for little smiles, big grips from small fingers, and coos that warm hearts and melt defenses. Thank you for being bigger than everything and better than we have yet discovered. Amen.

Daily D – Jeremiah 32:26-27

Jeremiah 32:26, 27 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”

Daily D – Jeremiah 29:7, 11, 13

Jeremiah 29:7, 11, 13 “Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 24:4-7

Jeremiah 24:4-7 Then the word of the LORD came to me: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent away from this place to the land of the Babylonians. My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them. I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 18:1-6

Jeremiah 18:1-6 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

Then the word of the LORD came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 17:7-8

Jeremiah 17:7, 8
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
