Psalm 76:4
You are radiant with light,
more majestic than mountains rich with game. (NIV)

What is God like? The book of Psalms provides dozens of descriptions of God’s attributes. The book of Psalms also tells us to exalt God, to magnify his name. How do we accomplish this? Look at this simple verse.

God is radiant with light. What does this mean? If you’ve ever gone snow skiing on a clear sky day full of brilliant sun, you know. And God’s brilliance is more brilliant than that. See Luke 9:28 and 29 for Luke’s description of what Peter, James, and John saw.

God is more majestic than mountains rich with game.

Years ago, I went hunting in the mountains of southwestern Colorado. As we drove around Durango on the way to our cabin at Lemon Lake, we had to be careful not to run into the dozens of elk and mule deer. I sat on the side of a steep ravine one morning and listened to a herd of elk walk through those woods near my position. The majestic voice of bugling elk was amazing.

I also had three close encounters with bears on that trip. One of those close encounters was very near where I sat listening to those elk navigate their journey through the wooded passages. You’re not supposed to run from a bear, but I think he was laughing too hard to chase after me. Grizzlies are well known for their sense of humor.

And our Father in heaven, in all his glory, is well known for unmatched majesty. Take a look at Isaiah’s experience in Isaiah 6:1-8.

Solomon loved fancy clothes. No doubt he looked good. Even so, he could merely reflect God’s beautiful brilliance. He had none of his own to shine nearly as brightly as the sun, and certainly not as brightly as our Savior.

What are your favorite descriptions of God’s brilliance and majesty?

Seeing God for who He is puts everything and everyone else in proper perspective. No one and nothing comes close to matching His glory. No king, no president, no potentate, no beauty queen can do anything more than receive and reflect his matchless brilliance.

I will see God for who he is and bow in reverence before his brilliance.

Our Father, you are unmatched in glory. You are incomparable in beauty. Your power is complete and authoritative. Your love, grace, and mercy are deeper, wider, and higher than any human measure could tally. I could use all the words at my command and all the emotions in my heart, and never in ten thousand lifetimes begin to declare your true nature, character, and being. Thank you for all the descriptions in the Book of Psalms and beyond that help us more fully understand what we will only completely experience when we kneel in your presence. Amen.
