Mark 14:3-9
Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.

Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked. “It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.

But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time. I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.”
(New Living Translation)

There are so many agendas that come into play when someone is about to die. Family dysfunctions are amplified. Some people with old wounds want to settle scores. Some people are on the lookout for what they can get out of the deal. And some people, well, some people grieve so deeply they don’t care what anyone else thinks.

Here, we have a story illustrating these differing agendas. A man healed of leprosy welcomed Jesus and his disciples into his home. Into this exclusive dinner came an uninvited guest who would not be stopped. She came to give a beautiful gift of grace and gratitude. Irritable men denigrated her. Jesus elevated her. We know her because of this act of extravagant worship.

The men “scolded her harshly.” Judas was so irritated that he made arrangements to betray Jesus.

Jesus edified her.

Death bears an aroma. Jesus went to the cross drenched with the aroma of deepest love and lavish gratitude.

I wonder if it was the aroma of life and love that helped alert the women to the living Jesus on that Resurrection morning?

Everyone has an agenda for Jesus. Bring yours to him in prayer. Enter his presence with worship and gratitude. Mixed motives disappear when we express love and thanksgiving without reserve.

I will pour out my deepest gratitude to Jesus with no other motive but loving worship.

Our Father, remove from my heart all the mixed motives of my self-centeredness. Receive my humble gift of worship. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 113:3

Psalm 113:3 From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the name of the LORD is to be praised.

Daily D – Psalm 112:4-5

Psalm 112:4, 5
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.

Daily D – Isaiah 6:1-7

Isaiah 6:1-7 “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

Daily D – Isaiah 1:18

Isaiah 1:18
“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.”

Daily D – 2 Kings 25:27-30

2 Kings 25:27-30 In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. He did this on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table. Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.
