Isaiah 55:8-13
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
 “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.” (NLT)

My bride, Ollie the Border Collie, and I took a walk last night after supper. The weather was practically perfect. Recent rains and sunshine worked together to produce deep shades of green ornamented with Spring flowers. Families played together. Friends sat on benches and enjoyed conversations matching the pleasant nature of their surroundings.

Red oaks and live oaks, pin oaks and white oaks lined our pathway. Pecan and evergreens added to the splendor. Our neighborhood is filled with old and strong, well-tended, and carefully shaped trees. Their canopies shade yards and make homes appear even more welcoming and warm.

This well-known passage from Isaiah reminds us how stately trees, in all their variety, are gifts from God. They remind us of Eden. They point us toward the renewal of all things.

Here is what God says is coming:

“You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Nature’s beauty is “an everlasting sign of God’s power and love.” Aging oaks standing strong and straight point us toward heaven. Gnarled and twisted trunks tell us stories of long-ago struggles overcome. Leaves turned toward the sun delight in soaking up all of God’s transforming goodness.

We never walk alone. Where we are headed is more beautiful still than the prettiest of parks. Sun and shadow create playful patterns now. The Light of the World will one day illumine the paths with a richness we cannot now bear. Even an evening as lovely as last night is merely a rehearsal for the perfection of beauty to come.

Ollie, my bride, and I will continue enjoying the warm-up laps before us as we prepare for the walk of life to come.

Join us?

I will walk with God, enjoy his beauty in nature, and anticipate so much more to come.

Our Father, fill my thoughts with yours. Shape my thinking. Teach me to observe and enjoy your endless goodness. Thank you for the simple pleasure of celebrating your gifts in nature and neighborhoods. Amen.

Daily D – Leviticus 8:23-26

Leviticus 8:23-26 The LORD said to Moses, “This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the tent of meeting, but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must not do the work. This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.”

Daily D – Psalm 40:1-3

Psalm 40:1-3

“I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him.”

Daily D – Leviticus 26:3-13

Leviticus 26:3-13 “‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land.

“ ‘I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.

“ ‘I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you. You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new. I will put my dwelling place among you, and I will not abhor you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.”

Daily D – Leviticus 25:17

Leviticus 25:17 “Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the Lord your God.”

Daily D – Psalm 37:5-6

Psalm 37:5, 6 “Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.”
