2 Samuel 13:3  Now Amnon had an adviser named Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man. (NIV)

Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭16‬  ‭Jesus said, “Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.” (‭‭CSB‬‬)

Jonadab was missing half of Jesus’ self-leadership equation.

To be as shrewd as a serpent, according to one definition, is to be practical, alert, and aware of possible dangers. To be as harmless as a dove is to maintain integrity, to live a non-confrontational life, and to be innocent, pure, and loving.

If Jonadab had embraced the “harmless as a dove” aspect that Jesus talked about all those years later, a whole lot of evil could have been avoided.

Beware of any confidante or advisor who is first and foremost shrewd. Cunning friends may provide a sneaky treat now and again, but in the long run, they may get you tossed out on your seat.

Our character rises or falls according to who we relate to most closely.

Self-leadership includes mastering the fine art of the stiff arm. There are some people like Jonadab who always want to stay close enough to whisper in our ears. The better part of wisdom is to keep them at arm’s length. At the same time, there are those we need to lean into so that we can hear them clearly. Knowing the difference has an outsize impact on our destinies.

Know when to push, and know when to pull.

I will cultivate relationships with practical and peaceful friends.

Our Father, thank you for surrounding me with people who are truly wise and have no malice in their hearts. Please deliver me from those cunning souls who always seek an edge against others. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 113:3

Psalm 113:3 From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the name of the LORD is to be praised.

Daily D – Psalm 112:4-5

Psalm 112:4, 5
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.

Daily D – Isaiah 6:1-7

Isaiah 6:1-7 “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

Daily D – Isaiah 1:18

Isaiah 1:18
“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.”

Daily D – 2 Kings 25:27-30

2 Kings 25:27-30 In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. He did this on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table. Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.
