Matthew 10:2-4  These are the names of the twelve apostles: First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. (CSB)

Jesus summoned (verse 1) and sent (verse 5) twelve men to proclaim, “The kingdom of heaven has come near,” (verse 6). You have likely noticed among these men were some political opponents. Theirs was not a shouting, insulting kind of opposition. Theirs was a “take up your sword” kind of opposition.

Matthew was a tax collector, a government employee considered a traitor to his people. He worked for the occupying government, which oppressed the people.

Simon the Zealot was from a group that wanted to violently overthrow the occupying government. It would not have been out of character for his clan if Matthew didn’t wake up some morning because his throat had been cut.

How in the world could these two men walk together, work together, and not wound one another?

If you have ever sat through a children’s Sunday School class, you know the answer is “Jesus.”

Jesus is bigger than political differences. Jesus is better than anything government could provide for us or that we could procure for ourselves. Jesus is bigger than labels slapped upon us by our adversaries, and he’s bigger than the groups we most naturally ally ourselves with.

Occupying governments, and all other governments as well, are temporary. Zealots come, and zealots go. Their issues rise and fall in predictable manner. Jesus is Jesus now and forever. He never changes. He is good all the time, and as the song says, all the time he is good.

Worship Jesus. Follow Jesus. Go where Jesus sends you. Say the words he places in your mind and in your mouth.

Never exalt anything to the level of Jesus. No political party, no single issue, no preference, no matter how powerful.

At the name of Jesus, everything under heaven bows.

Can we live like this in our day? If Matthew the Tax Collector and Simon the Zealot could come together regarding Jesus, we can come together regarding Jesus with those in other political parties and those whose issues drive us nuts. Ultimate truth and meaning always rise above politics and preferences. If they don’t, then we’ve made idols out of those passing personalities and temporary issues.

When we come together to Jesus, we lay aside anything else that separates us. We begin to see one another and our issues from his perspective. Everything becomes clearer through his lenses.

Come to Jesus, and bring your friends and your political opposition. See Jesus for who he is so we can see politics and issues for what they are.

I will help others see political opposites and current issues from the perspective of Jesus.

Our Father, open our eyes so that we may see politicians and issues from your perspective. Deliver us from the tendency to make politics more important than it is. Free us from captivity to issues that demand more attention than is healthy or warranted. Empower us to lead everyone to you for clarity and meaning in this troubled age. Amen.

Daily D – Jeremiah 32:26-27

Jeremiah 32:26, 27 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”

Daily D – Jeremiah 29:7, 11, 13

Jeremiah 29:7, 11, 13 “Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 24:4-7

Jeremiah 24:4-7 Then the word of the LORD came to me: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent away from this place to the land of the Babylonians. My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them. I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 18:1-6

Jeremiah 18:1-6 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

Then the word of the LORD came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 17:7-8

Jeremiah 17:7, 8
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
