Luke 22:24
Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest. (CSB)

Within minutes they were bickering over who of them would end up the greatest. (The Message)

“If you’re not serving, you’re not leading.”

I don’t know who originally said these words this way, but I do know where they originated. After the most significant Passover meal ever, the men gathered around Jesus began arguing about who was the greatest. At the moment when they should have been paying the closest attention, when they should have hung on every word of Jesus, they were instead focused on themselves.

Some things never change.

People are endlessly fascinated with themselves. I’m guessing everyone has thought at one time or another, “If everyone would do things the way I do them, everything would be better.”

Skip forward a few paragraphs and see how these would-be Great Leaders led themselves. Every one of them led himself out of the final picture frame. Only John was there when Jesus breathed his last. None of them took his body and laid it in the tomb.

Before we can lead others with integrity, we have to lead ourselves with character and commitment.

All of those gathered at the most important meal this side of heaven failed the test of leadership. Where was true greatness found among those in that room? That night, it was completely absent.

Except for Jesus. Jesus washed feet. Jesus explained the fulfillment of the Passover. Jesus was the Passover lamb. Jesus showed his disciples how to lay down their lives for their friends.

Great leaders serve.

Great leaders serve to the uttermost.

Great leaders empower others.

The next time you are tempted to pull a Muhammed Ali, “I’m the greatest,” remember how Jesus served. Remember how he modeled leadership by serving. Remember how he corrected his misguided disciples about this idea of serving. (See verses 25-27).

Jesus makes it clear: The greatest and the leader of the pack is the one who serves.

Jesus made it clear: If you’re not serving, you’re not leading.

I will lead myself well and lead others by serving them as Jesus modeled and taught.

Our Father, please forgive me for seeking to be in control. I joyfully defer to your leadership. You are in charge here, not me. Empower me to empower others. Remind me as often as necessary that my best work is done on my knees before those in need. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 113:3

Psalm 113:3 From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the name of the LORD is to be praised.

Daily D – Psalm 112:4-5

Psalm 112:4, 5
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.

Daily D – Isaiah 6:1-7

Isaiah 6:1-7 “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

Daily D – Isaiah 1:18

Isaiah 1:18
“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.”

Daily D – 2 Kings 25:27-30

2 Kings 25:27-30 In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. He did this on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table. Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.
