Isaiah 40:25, 26
“To whom will you compare me?
Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.” (NIV)

Our God is Star Maker, Star Namer, and Star Arranger. Now tell me about your god.

A few verses later, Isaiah helps us see the nature of other gods.

“With whom, then, will you compare God?
To what image will you liken him?
As for an idol, a metalworker casts it,
and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it.
A person too poor to present such an offering
selects wood that will not rot;
they look for a skilled worker
 to set up an idol that will not topple.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭18‬-‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Toppling gods are not good at making stars. They’re not good at giving names to the endless array of sparkling lights arranged so delightfully above us and beyond anything we can see.

Our God is beyond compare.

Our God is incomparable.

It’s fun to see the photos from space that astronauts and satellites send back to us from their missions. The beauty is majestic. We are blown away every time new heavenly lights are seen more clearly, or are discovered for the first time.

Our Father in heaven exists in perfect joy. He not only sees these same lights that awe us day by day and evening by evening; He created them. What we enjoy now and again is his constant pleasure.

Our daughter sent photos of our granddaughters last night. It’s always heartwarming to see the girls in playful repose. Again, our Father in Heaven sees this millions of times over in every moment.

Thank God for a God who doesn’t topple.

Thank God for a God who is not made with perishable materials.

Thank God for a God who is such an artist and enjoys captivating his creation with more of his creative best.

Where will you find beauty, wonder, and awe today? As the philosophers have noted across the centuries, we tend to see what we look for. Please don’t settle for earthbound gods that topple over when the wind blows or the earth shakes. Enjoy our God who made everything for our enjoyment.

Sometime in the next few days, go out at night and observe the stars and constellations. Read Psalm 19. Read Psalm 8 aloud. Join the ancient poets, and men, women, and children from every generation who sing God’s praises in response to his glorious decoration of the universe created to delight this little planet and all of us two-legged creatures who walk about it day by day.

I will worship our star-making God alone.

Our Father, thank you for creating such beauty. Thank you for blessing us with such wonder. Thank you that you give us something every single day that leads us into a state of awe. We will join the psalmists of old in singing your praises as an expression of the joy we experience at the work of your hands. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 61:1-3

Isaiah 61:1-3 “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.”

Daily D – Isaiah 60:19-22

Isaiah 60:19-22 The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Your sun will never set again,
and your moon will wane no more;
the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will end.
Then all your people will be righteous
and they will possess the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted,
the work of my hands,
for the display of my splendor.
The least of you will become a thousand,
the smallest a mighty nation.
I am the LORD;
in its time I will do this swiftly.”

Daily D – Proverbs 18:22

Proverbs 18:22 He who finds a wife finds what is good
and receives favor from the Lord.

Daily D – Isaiah 55:6-7

Isaiah 55:6, 7 “Seek the LORD while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.”

Daily D – Isaiah 49:15-16

Isaiah 49:15, 16 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are ever before me.”
