Ezekiel 28:1, 2 
The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: 
“ ‘In the pride of your heart 
you say, “I am a god; 
I sit on the throne of a god 
in the heart of the seas.” 
But you are a mere mortal and not a god, 
though you think you are as wise as a god.” (NIV)

In the movie Groundhog Day, Bill Murray’s character, Phil Connors, says to his producer, played by Andie MacDowell, “I am a god. Not the God, but a god.” 

This is high comedy, and one of the best movies ever made. Some people, however, don’t get the joke. They really think they are God, or at least a god. 

I watched a guy on a PBS show when I was in high school who talked about people who think more highly of themselves than they ought. He referred specifically to one of the young women who was very popular for her swimsuit photos. He reminded us that she has to go to the bathroom every day, just like we do. 

This thought knocked me off my rocker for a second. I had not spent much time thinking about other people’s bathroom habits until that moment, and then regretted that I had. His remark, however, had its desired effect. He reminded us that even the gods of this age have to poop. 

It’s pretty funny, fifty years later, seeing those young women, formerly young women, at their ages today, and how few of them look anything like models in their swimsuits. 

Here is a truth truer than true: gods get old, and God our Father never does. 

Our Father in Heaven is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is perfect love and perfect joy. 

Little gods have little value. They are not worth the time or effort it takes to bend the knee before them. 

God is God, and I am not. 

God is God, and you are not. 

God is God, and none of the gods of this age are God.

Our Father in Heaven, there is none like you. You alone are God. I belong to you. Thank you for being so good and kind. Thank you for your justice and mercy, your grace and compassion. Thank you that you rule yesterday, today, and forever. Thank you that you are not capricious, changing your will and your ways, your mind and your purpose. Instead, you are trustworthy and true now and forever. Amen. 

A Note: I use the dictation app Wispr Flow to write these devotionals. This is a wonderful tool. However, it has not yet learned to use a capital G or a lowercase g when referring to God. Sometimes it gets it right. Sometimes it does not. I tell you this only because I don’t want you to think I’m psychotic. I’m confident the app will learn after repeated use. Until then, smile and know that I am not that great of a grammar and syntax failure.
