Psalm 49:20
Mankind, with his assets
but without understanding,
is like the animals that perish. (CSB)

We aren’t immortal. We don’t last long.
Like our dogs, we age and weaken. And die. (MSG)

Assets without understanding are dangerous. This is a simple truth and painfully true. The Message paraphrase is especially encouraging (not) to those of us facing uncomfortable obstacles soon. Take a look at that bottom line:

We age. We weaken. We die.

This sounds like a Monday verse, doesn’t it? It’s the kind of verse you would expect after traveling across the country and back, arriving early at the destination and having to sit on the tarmac for forty-five minutes until a thunderstorm clears the area, making everyone late for dinner, and the five-year-old birthday girl even later for bed on the night before her big party.

It sounds like the kind of verse you would expect on a Monday when the return flight is struck by lightning, you can’t get to sleep even though you are back in your own bed with your own pillow, and you have an important appointment the next day in preparation for surgery the following Monday.

Observation: Mondays often deserve their reputation.

What’s your favorite Monday song? The Mamas and The Papas sang the memorable line, “Can’t trust that day,” in their classic Monday, Monday.

Mondays may be blue, rainy days. They may be filled with more appointments and issues than we can imagine. They may wear us down and beat us up. Mondays can be so Monday.

Where do we go for hope with Bible verses like this one and the day of the week more people die from heart attacks on more than any other?

Scroll back up the psalm and find verse 5. Here is a timely rhetorical question.

Why should I fear in times of trouble?

Implied answer: I shouldn’t.

God is in charge here, even on Monday. This puts a whole new spin on this day with the bad reputation. Because God is working out his plan and his purpose, we can relax into his gracious hands and loving heart.

This is a good day
To learn how to pray
In a whole new way

Pray fear into faith.

Trust God from the bottom of your heart.

Live in the confidence of God’s good grace for this moment and this place.

I will live confidently.

Our Father, you led us through the storms. You protected us from destructive possibilities. You gave us peace and safety. You blessed us with rest. You are here with us now, you will be with us all day, you are as available as ever and as loving, strong, and wonderful beyond our greatest need. Thank you for this Monday. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 112:4-5

Psalm 112:4, 5
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.

Daily D – Isaiah 6:1-7

Isaiah 6:1-7 “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

Daily D – Isaiah 1:18

Isaiah 1:18
“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.”

Daily D – 2 Kings 25:27-30

2 Kings 25:27-30 In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. He did this on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table. Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.

Daily D – 2 Kings 20:19

2 Kings 20:19 “The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?”
