John 13:3  Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands, that he had come from God, and that he was going back to God. (CSB)

John 13:3-5  Jesus knew that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his way back to God. So he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put on an apron. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, drying them with his apron. (MSG)

What does this make possible?

This is one of my favorite questions. Yesterday, my coworker Becky and I had a Zoom meeting with a significant leader. At one point in the conversation, this question naturally arose.

We do not find this question in this calm scene before the storm to come, but we do find its answer.

“Jesus knew.” What Jesus knew made everything possible: everything that happened that evening, the next day, and the days that followed.

“Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands, that he had come from God, and that he was going back to God.”

Jesus knew where he came from and why. He knew what he was to do while he was here. He knew he was going back to the Father. What did that make possible?

Anything, everything, and whatever was necessary.

Jesus could face the cross, not without deep emotion, but with confident assurance of what it would achieve and where it would lead on the other side.

Some journeys are smooth sailing. Others are bumpy, maybe even frightening. Safe arrivals and destinations reached calm our fears and help us live and serve freely and fully.

Jesus knows now just as he knew then.

What he knows and what he has declared should give us confidence as storm clouds gather, thunder rumbles, lightning flashes, and destruction looms. When we belong to Jesus, we belong to the One who calms storms and calms those who know and love him.

He knows the storms on the horizon, the storms in our hearts, the storms in our work, and the storms in our nation. He knows what lies on the other side. He knows how it all ends. He knows the best is yet to come for all of us who follow his will and ways.

Here’s what you can know about today: He knows. He’s in charge. Everything ends in glory. We do not have to be afraid. We can live joyfully knowing where we’re going, and all it makes possible. We have his word on it:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life,” (John 14:6).

What does this make possible?

Anything, everything, and whatever is necessary.

I will know Jesus who knows everything, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Our Father, I want to know Jesus so deeply that whatever lies ahead does not cause terror but anticipation. I want to live confidently no matter what comes. I want to show everyone how good you are. Amen.

Daily D – Acts 18:26

Acts 18:26 When Priscilla and Aquila heard him preaching boldly in the synagogue, they took him aside and explained the way of God even more accurately.

Daily D – Acts 17:11-12

Acts 17:11, 12 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.

Daily D – Acts 13:22

Acts 13:22 But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’”

Daily D – Acts 12:1-5

Acts 12:1-5 About that time King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church. He had the apostle James (John’s brother) killed with a sword. When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish people, he also arrested Peter. (This took place during the Passover celebration.) Then he imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring Peter out for public trial after the Passover. But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.

Daily D – Acts 10:24-26

Acts 10:24-26 They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends. As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter pulled him up and said, “Stand up! I’m a human being just like you!”
