Deuteronomy 17:16, 17  “The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself or send his people to Egypt to buy horses, for the Lord has told you, ‘You must never return to Egypt.’ The king must not take many wives for himself, because they will turn his heart away from the Lord. And he must not accumulate large amounts of wealth in silver and gold for himself.” (NLT)

Want to live a kingly life? Focus less on the accouterments, a fancy word for distractions, and focus more on God’s purpose and guidance.

There are certain delights only available to the wealthy and powerful. There are special treats the wealthy and powerful indulge in lavishly. Good things are good things for people at all economic levels. Each person enjoys particular luxuries. God has given us all good things for our enjoyment. (See 1 Timothy 6:17 specifically and the rest of the chapter for more insight regarding money matters.)

Our focus is not to be on things but on our relationship with God and those he brings into our lives. We are to use the wealth God entrusts to us not only for our own entertainment, but to serve others in Jesus’ name. The Apostle Paul continued his thoughts about money in verse 18 with these words:

“Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6‬:‭18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

If you need a good sermon outline or Bible study, here are your three points. Now all you need is a poem or a song, and you are ready to preach and teach. Also, and more importantly, you have God’s wisdom for how to live.

1. Be rich in good works.
2. Be generous to those in need.
3. Be ready always to share with others.

These B Vitamins remove the distractions that lead rulers into error and become accouterments for joining God in his loving initiatives to spread his grace and administer his mercy to those who have yet to receive the full measure necessary for salvation and service, growth and giving.

Become indistractible by focusing on good works, generosity, and giving. Become more like our gracious God by giving your best efforts, resources, and recognition. For God so loved the world, he gave . . . (John 3:16).

I will live generously.

Our Father, empower me to extend your grace in all I do and say. Make me rich in good works. Make me generous to those in need. Make me ready to share with others out of the abundance you have placed in my hands. Thank you for your generosity with us. Give us gracious hearts to spread your love. Amen.

Daily D – 1 Kings 2:1-4

1 Kings 2:1-4 When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’”
