2 Samuel 20:23-26  Now Joab was the commander of the army of Israel. Benaiah son of Jehoiada was captain of the king’s bodyguard. Adoniram was in charge of forced labor. Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the royal historian. Sheva was the court secretary. Zadok and Abiathar were the priests. And Ira, a descendant of Jair, was David’s personal priest. (NLT)

The men named in this paragraph each have a story worth knowing. However, the story they tell here is more about King David than them.

David was wise enough to know that he did not have the leadership capacity in himself to do everything necessary to lead a nation. It is foolish for any leader to think he or she has the gravitas, wisdom, and perspective to apply equal measures of competence in all things. Any leader who tries is a leader you know will fail sooner than they expect and harder than they imagine.

You and I are not kings and queens. Even so, we each need a handful of people we trust who will love us enough to tell us the truth, provide strength where we are weak, and give advice that seeks our highest good.

This text tells us about eight leaders with specific duties. Who are your eight wise friends who can help you stay in step with God and in favor with others? Who lifts you, empowers you, cautions you, counsels you, and warns you? Who do you need to invite into your circles of influence who will shape your life with their wisdom and courage, strength and character?

Go to 2 Samuel 21:15-17 and see where David would have been without a friend in a tight space. Friends save our lives, our souls, and our hopes and dreams. They comfort us when we experience loss. They shelter us in storms. They give us laughter when we need it and joy when we share it.

You and I will never be at our best without dependable friends.

I will cultivate friends who will make me better in all the right ways.

Our Father, I was pleasantly surprised yesterday by a friend at the airport. I had breakfast this morning with two friends who are wiser than I am. I will see a new friend in the next hour. We will spend two days with new friends from all over the Washington, D.C. area. Help us establish and deepen relationships that will make us all smarter, better, and faster. Amen.

Daily D – 1 Kings 17:1-6

1 Kings 17:1-6 Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, “As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!”

Then the Lord said to Elijah, “Go to the east and hide by Kerith Brook, near where it enters the Jordan River. Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food.”

So Elijah did as the Lord told him and camped beside Kerith Brook, east of the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook.

Daily D – 1 Kings 12:12-14

1 Kings 12:12-14 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to hear Rehoboam’s decision, just as the king had ordered. But Rehoboam spoke harshly to the people, for he rejected the advice of the older counselors and followed the counsel of his younger advisers. He told the people, “My father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!”

Daily D – 1 Kings 10:13

1 Kings 10:13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba whatever she asked for, besides all the customary gifts he had so generously given. Then she and all her attendants returned to their own land.

Daily D – 1 Kings 8:23-26

1 Kings 8:23-26 and he prayed, “O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in all of heaven above or on the earth below. You keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion. You have kept your promise to your servant David, my father. You made that promise with your own mouth, and with your own hands you have fulfilled it today.
“And now, O Lord, God of Israel, carry out the additional promise you made to your servant David, my father. For you said to him, ‘If your descendants guard their behavior and faithfully follow me as you have done, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’ Now, O God of Israel, fulfill this promise to your servant David, my father.”

Daily D – 1 Kings 3:10-15

1 Kings 3:10-15 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies— I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.”

Then Solomon woke up and realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, where he sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he invited all his officials to a great banquet.
