Who among you fears the LORD and listens to his servant? Who among you walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD; let him lean on his God.
ISAIAH 50:10 (CSB)

_____________________________________________________________________________

Who out there fears GOD,
actually listens to the voice of his servant?
For anyone out there who doesn’t know where you are going,
anyone groping in the dark,
here’s what: Trust in GOD.
Lean on your God!

(The Message)

John Stallings wrote the gospel song Learning to Lean which comes to mind when reading this text. The chorus says,

I’m learning to lean, learning to lean,
Learning to lean on Jesus.
Finding more power than I’d ever dreamed,
I’m learning to lean on Jesus.

Everyone needs someone they can lean on. No one is equally and supremely strong in every area of their lives. Consider your own life. You are probably better than average in many ways. Even so, do you know anyone who is spiritually stronger than you? Is there anyone you know who is more physically disciplined than you?

Is there anyone more intellectually astute than you? Is there anyone more relationally connected than you? Is there anyone more emotionally intelligent than you? And, last, is there anyone more financially fit than you?

As for me, I can think of individuals who are ahead of me, some much further ahead of me, in each of these areas. Maybe I am more average than I thought. Maybe you are too.

One thing I know for sure, there are days, weeks, months, and so on when I cannot stand on my own two feet without assistance. God says through Isaiah here that we all need to learn to lean. The strongest thing we can do in many cases is to admit our weakness.

The Apostle Paul understood the necessity of leaning on Jesus. Listen to his personal testimony recorded in 2 Corinthians 12:9, 10:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.’ Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Physical therapy begins soon for my recent surgery. Learning to lean lessons resume today. Join me in confessing our weaknesses to Jesus. Learn to lean on him for greater strength than you or I could ever achieve. Remember what the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:25: “God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.”
_____________________________________________________________________________

I will lean on Jesus and depend on his strength.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Our Father, how weak I am! Every time I think I have mastered one area or another of my life, I discover there is growth yet to lean into. For whatever is ahead of me today, give me the wisdom to lean on you. Your foolishness is wiser than my wisdom. Your weakness is greater than my strength. I depend on you for all things at all times. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 106:1-3

Psalm 106:1-3
Praise the LORD!
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
Who can list the glorious miracles of the LORD?
Who can ever praise him enough?
There is joy for those who deal justly with others
and always do what is right.

Daily D – Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 103:1-5
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
He forgives all my sins
and heals all my diseases.
He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender mercies.
He fills my life with good things.
My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

Daily D – Psalm 92:4

Psalm 92:4
“You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!
I sing for joy because of what you have done.”

Daily D – Psalm 86:5-7

Psalm 86:5-7
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O LORD;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.

Daily D – Psalm 84:5-7

Psalm 84:5-7
And how blessed all those in whom you live,
whose lives become roads you travel;
They wind through lonesome valleys, come upon brooks,
discover cool springs and pools brimming with rain!
God-traveled, these roads curve up the mountain,
and at the last turn—Zion! God in full view!
