Daily D – Psalm 69:5-6

by | May 12, 2021 | Daily D | 0 comments

God, you know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from you. Do not let those who put their hope in you be disgraced because of me, Lord GOD of Armies; do not let those who seek you be humiliated because of me, God of Israel.
PSALM 69:5-6 (CSB)

_____________________________________________________________________________

God, you know every sin I’ve committed;
My life’s a wide-open book before you.
Don’t let those who look to you in hope
Be discouraged by what happens to me,
Dear Lord! GOD of the armies!

(The Message)

There are many people who look at a handful, or a relative handful, of Christians and attempt to prove that God cannot exist if his followers are like THAT, whatever THAT may be. This is not a new idea. King David understood this reality nearly three thousand years ago.

He knew his heart. He knew his failures. He knew that as he had failed before, he would fail again. His prayer is humble and full of emotion. He did not wish to prevent anyone from seeing how good God is by being distracted by how sinful he was.

That’s good praying.

One of our duties as followers of Jesus is to help people see how good he is. It is pretty hard to do this if we are trying to show them how good we are. No matter how good we think we might be, we all fail. Celebrity Christians fail. Political Christians fail. Athlete Christians fail. I, yes, even I fail.

Jesus never fails.

John the Baptist had the right idea in John 3:30. More Jesus; less me.

You will fail. I will fail. King David failed. Our Father in heaven never does. He can do anything but fail. Jesus never failed. He died better than we live.

Keep the focus on our Father in heaven, and not on us. Point people to Jesus. Humble repentance as public as our sin provides a nice arrow directing people toward God’s goodness. Ignoring our own sin or pretending it is less of a problem than it is turns people away. Let’s be honest to God and to everyone else.

I will get out of the way so that people can see how good God is.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Our Father, I want everyone to see how good you are. I do not want to attempt to get people to be impressed with how good I am. I fail. You never do. I agree with John the Baptist when he said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Make my life an arrow pointing toward your glory and goodness. Amen.

From the depths of despair, O LORD,
I call for your help.

Pay attention to my prayer.

Daily D – Psalm 125:4-5

Psalm 125:4, 5
O LORD, do good to those who are good,
whose hearts are in tune with you.
But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O LORD.
Take them away with those who do evil.
May Israel have peace!

Daily D – Psalm 116:15

The LORD cares deeply
when his loved ones die.

Daily D – Psalm 106:1-3

Psalm 106:1-3
Praise the LORD!
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
Who can list the glorious miracles of the LORD?
Who can ever praise him enough?
There is joy for those who deal justly with others
and always do what is right.

Daily D – Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 103:1-5
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
He forgives all my sins
and heals all my diseases.
He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender mercies.
He fills my life with good things.
My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!
