And I said, “This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.” PSALM 77:10 (NLT)

“Just my luck,” I said. “The High God goes out of business just the moment I need him.”
The Message

Got whiplash? We have moved from righteous indignation to unrighteous destruction to a re-expanding pandemic in rather short order. You are forgiven if you are having a hard time knowing where to focus. All three balls, and maybe more, are in the air and require constant juggling.

Psalm 77 is one of my favorites. It tells a story I have often lived. Take it and read it top to bottom. Whatever your favorite Bible translation, start there. Then read the New Living Translation and The Message. Listen to vv. 7-9 in The Message:

Will the Lord walk off and leave us for good?
Will he never smile again?
Is his love worn threadbare?
Has his salvation promise burned out?
Has God forgotten his manners?
Has he angrily stalked off and left us?

Asaph the Poet wrote as if he were walking in our shoes. The more things change, the more they stay the same. And that is exactly, precisely what Asaph said next.

But then I recall all you have done, O LORD;
I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
They are constantly in my thoughts.
I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.
vv. 11, 12

Our Father in heaven never changes. He is always mighty. He is always good. He is always motivated and animated by his never-ending love. He saves, delivers, and heals. He specializes in the impossible.

Caught between the devil and the deep Red Sea? No way back? No way forward? Hemmed in before and behind?

When the Red Sea saw you, O God,
its waters looked and trembled!
The sea quaked to its very depths.
v. 16

Then comes one of my favorite verses in the whole Bible:

Your road led through the sea,
Your pathway through the mighty waters—
A pathway no one knew was there.
v. 17

I do not read history; I read His story. Better than any movie script, better than any novel, more exciting than any thriller, more amazing than anything ever seen yet, God is working out his ultimate plan for planet Earth and all its inhabitants. He is Waymaker.

Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper
Light in the darkness
My God, that is who You are

No matter how dark, no matter how dangerous, no matter how frightening, no matter how lost, God will make a way when there seems to be no way.

Do not despair another day.
God will always make a way.
Today could be that very day.

I will go with God who knows the way, shows the way, and goes all the way with us.

Our Father, you are the way, the truth, and the life. Without you there is no going. Without you there is no knowing. Without you there is no living. Show us the way we should go, for to you we lift up our souls. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 65:1-2

Isaiah 65:1, 2
The Lord says, “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help.
I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me.
I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’
to a nation that did not call on my name.
All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people.
But they follow their own evil paths
and their own crooked schemes.”

Daily D – Psalm 131

Psalm 131
Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always.

Daily D – Isaiah 55:8-13

Isaiah 55:8-13
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Daily D – Isaiah 50:4-5

Isaiah 50:4, 5 “The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,
so that I know how to comfort the weary.
Morning by morning he wakens me
and opens my understanding to his will.
The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me,
and I have listened.
I have not rebelled or turned away.”

Daily D – Isaiah 48:17-18

Isaiah 48:17, 18 This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you what is good for you
and leads you along the paths you should follow.
Oh, that you had listened to my commands!
Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river
and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.”
