Luke 21:37, 38  Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives. The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him. (New Living Translation)

Several of my most meaningful experiences with God have taken place at a retreat center in the mountains of northern New Mexico. The memories of that place and those times of experiencing God continue to encourage me today.

My coworker and two men who served as pastors in our association are leading a training event at our retreat center near Glen Rose, Texas, this week. We love coming here and helping pastors, church staff members, and other church leaders deepen their relationship with God.

In a few minutes, I will take a walk and count the deer. The sun will rise, morning birds will sing, cows will bellow, and dogs will bark as they begin their days.

I love early mornings.

Imagine a retreat where every morning began with Jesus. He walked with his disciples into Jerusalem and entered the Temple grounds. Excited crowds gathered and hung on his every word. That was a week they would never forget.

It was during my college years that I began making my first halting steps toward arising early enough to spend time with God before classes and work. This habit has been honed in the many years since. Bedtime is exciting. It means I get to rise early and enjoy coffee and Jesus.

Healthy habits make us stronger. Of all the habits I have cultivated in my life, this one is the most meaningful.

Whether the morning begins at a retreat center or in our humble home, time alone with God brings heaven within reach and purpose to bear on the coming events of the day.

It’s time to lean into God’s wisdom for this new day. It’s time to walk and pray. It’s time to live a full and meaningful day.

I will begin each day in time alone with God.

Our Father, speak to my heart each morning. Shape my life for the adventures of each day. Prepare me and equip me for conversations and encouragement. Use me to accomplish your purpose for my life. Amen.

Ezekiel 28:1, 2 The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“ ‘In the pride of your heart
you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne of a god
in the heart of the seas.”
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
though you think you are as wise as a god.”

Daily D – Psalm 143:10

Psalm 143:10 “Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
lead me on level ground.”

Daily D – Psalm 140:8

Psalm 140:8 “Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD;
do not let their plans succeed.”

Daily D – Ezekiel 11:19-20

Ezekiel 11:19, 20 “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.”

Daily D – Ezekiel 7:27

Ezekiel 7:27
The king will mourn,
the prince will be clothed with despair,
and the hands of the people of the land will tremble.
I will deal with them according to their conduct,
and by their own standards I will judge them.
 ‘Then they will know that I am the LORD.’ ”
