2 Chronicles 10:7
They replied, “If you will be kind to this people and please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever.” (CSB)

They said, “If you will be a servant to this people, be considerate of their needs and respond with compassion, work things out with them, they’ll end up doing anything for you.” (MSG)

How to Win Friends and Influence People was not written in time to redirect Rehoboam. He sure could have used Dale Carnegie in his day.

Rebo inherited his father Solomon’s wealth but not his wisdom. This placed him in a dangerous position. He was tested early, and he failed immediately. It didn’t have to be that way.

Rehoboam was urged by his father’s wise counselors to treat the leaders of the people with kindness. Solomon had left a lot of good stuff in place. It was an opportune moment to stop pressing so hard into building the kingdom. It was an equally opportune moment to build people.

Rebo listened to the wise advice of his father’s counselors and considered it. Then he listened to the buddies he grew up with who had no leadership experience or wisdom. They told him to be a Tough Guy to show how strong he was. It didn’t take long for him to figure out he wasn’t as tough as he thought he was. His leadership opportunity shrunk to meet his capacity.

If you should face the choice of being a Tough Guy or a Kind Guy, I commend to you the path of Kindness. Tough Guys get what they want when they want it until they meet up with someone tougher. There is always someone tougher.

Kindness provides a broader group of friends. It makes conversations more enjoyable. It leads to better decision-making. It makes us hard to offend and less likely to behave offensively. Kindness builds character. Kindness wins the game of life.

How do you know you are becoming more like Christ? You become kinder and gentler. Remember, Jesus was not a jerk. He was not mean or self-centered. He willingly laid down his life to make a way for us to enjoy a deep and abiding relationship with our Father in Heaven.

Kindness wins friends and influences people. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 2:4,

Or do you despise the riches of his kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

Kindness provides what we really want and offers what others really need.

I will live in such a manner that others anticipate kindness from me.

Our Father, empower me to live shaped by your kindness. Bless me with kind thoughts, kind speech, and kind behavior. Deliver me from tough-guy arrogance and tough-guy failure. Make me more like our kind and gentle savior who laid down his life for his friends. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 65:1-2

Isaiah 65:1, 2
The Lord says, “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help.
I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me.
I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’
to a nation that did not call on my name.
All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people.
But they follow their own evil paths
and their own crooked schemes.”

Daily D – Psalm 131

Psalm 131
Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always.

Daily D – Isaiah 55:8-13

Isaiah 55:8-13
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Daily D – Isaiah 50:4-5

Isaiah 50:4, 5 “The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,
so that I know how to comfort the weary.
Morning by morning he wakens me
and opens my understanding to his will.
The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me,
and I have listened.
I have not rebelled or turned away.”

Daily D – Isaiah 48:17-18

Isaiah 48:17, 18 This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you what is good for you
and leads you along the paths you should follow.
Oh, that you had listened to my commands!
Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river
and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.”
