Psalm 23:1
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need.” (CSB)

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” (NIV)

GOD, my shepherd!
I don’t need a thing.
(The Message)

Our younger granddaughter loves blueberries. She can never get enough. Her favorite word is Snack. Ask her if she wants one and watch her eyes light up. The next word out of her mouth as she finishes her snack is More. I cannot help but smile at these images.

As good grandparents, we typically cut off the snacks after two. I have to say this not only because it’s true, but because our granddaughter’s mother often reads these daily devotionals. Call me later for the rest of the story.

One day, Jesus and the Boys sailed away across the Sea of Galilee. Jesus said what turned out to be confusing words to his neophyte followers. One or more of them said, “We didn’t bring any bread,” (Matthew 16:7). The next paragraph is a potent reminder of God’s nature and provision.

“Aware of this, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread? Don’t you understand yet? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand and how many baskets you collected? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many large baskets you collected? Why is it you don’t understand that when I told you, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,’ it wasn’t about bread?” Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭8‬-‭12‬ ‭CSB‬‬

Bread is never a problem with our Father in Heaven. Remember the daily bread in the wilderness? Remember how everyone who followed God’s instructions always had enough, and no one ever had too little?

Bread is never a problem with Jesus. He fed five thousand men with a little boy’s lunch, and there were twelve baskets full of leftovers. He fed four thousand men from seven loaves and a few fish, and there were seven baskets of leftovers.

King David learned his lesson well. God is enough. More than enough, in fact. Everything we have traces its source back to him. He is the Giver of All Good Things.

This idea is bigger than bread, bigger than Sunday Dinner, bigger than the spread at a family reunion. God’s provision extends to every area of our lives. Read the rest of the psalm.

Need rest and restoration? Consider it done.

Need direction in life? All you have to do is follow his steps.

Need enlightenment in a dark season? He is, as you know, the Light of the World.

Need protection along the journey? There’s no one bigger, smarter, faster, or stronger than the Creator of the World.

Need assurance and comfort when you find yourself in a tough spot? He sets out a picnic in the presence of those who oppose you.

Need to know he loves you, really loves you? He welcomes you as more than an honored guest. He welcomes you as his beloved child.

Need all of this and more every single day of your life? His goodness and faithful love are with you every moment now and forever.

Need a resting place at the end of the journey? He takes us on to his house.

King David is right. “I have what I need.”

I will delight in God’s compassionate care the way our granddaughter delights in snacks.

Our Father, you are all I need. You guide and provide. You protect and defend. You love me with an unending love. You have prepared a place for me to be with you forever. Not only are you all I need, you are all I desire. Amen.

Daily D – 2 Peter 1:5-8

2 Peter 1:5-8 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace,
for it is trusting in you.

because in the LORD, the LORD himself,
is an everlasting rock!
