2 Kings 19:17-19  “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.”

Wood, stone, and precious metal make fragile gods. Fragile gods ultimately fail. Fragile gods lead to fragile followers. Our God, however, can do anything but fail. The battle is won. The war is over.

Psalm 46:10 is a declaration of truth for every age, and for the age beyond all time: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Now and again, when you begin to wonder if God is alive and well and active in this world, remember Isaiah 37, 2 Kings 19, and 2 Chronicles 32. A brash politician declared his superiority over everyone and everything. He destroyed every god of every people who got in his way. Our Father in heaven was next on his list.

There is one God who did not, and does not, fail. He does not tremble when politicians politick. They may have their fingers on switches to launch bombs, but he has his finger on times and seasons, inputs and outcomes, now and forever. When all is said and done, he alone will have the final say.

What are you afraid of? What makes you tremble?

Go back to Psalm 46. Read verse 1: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

God is
1. Our refuge
2. Our strength
3. Our ever-present help

Read the rest of the psalm and take note of how it sounds a lot like the newspaper. It also writes upcoming headlines. Verse 11 reminds us of how we can live in ultimate security in this insecure world.

The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
The one God who did not fail when every other god did (and does) is still in charge. Align yourself with him and live confidently in a world where just about every headline and every breaking news bulletin is tragic and scary. Join him in doing the kind of work he prescribes and empowers. Trust him to overcome the increasing darkness of this world with life, light, and goodness.

I will trust the God who does not fail.

Our Father, as the old song says, you can do anything, anything, anything but fail. You will win this day. You will win this era. You will win all of time because you have beaten death, beaten politicians, beaten empires, beaten every test of every time. You win. You are the Eternal One. You have the final say. Thank you for refuge, strength, and help for this day and all those to come. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 65:1-2

Isaiah 65:1, 2
The Lord says, “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help.
I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me.
I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’
to a nation that did not call on my name.
All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people.
But they follow their own evil paths
and their own crooked schemes.”

Daily D – Psalm 131

Psalm 131
Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always.

Daily D – Isaiah 55:8-13

Isaiah 55:8-13
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Daily D – Isaiah 50:4-5

Isaiah 50:4, 5 “The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,
so that I know how to comfort the weary.
Morning by morning he wakens me
and opens my understanding to his will.
The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me,
and I have listened.
I have not rebelled or turned away.”

Daily D – Isaiah 48:17-18

Isaiah 48:17, 18 This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you what is good for you
and leads you along the paths you should follow.
Oh, that you had listened to my commands!
Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river
and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.”
