Psalm 52:8

      But I am like an olive tree
         flourishing in the house of God;
         I trust in God’s unfailing love
         for ever and ever.

This is a song of contrasts. Doeg the Edomite reported to King Saul where David had fled from his presence when Saul attempted to kill him. Saul then had Doeg kill the priest and his family. (See 1 Samuel 21 and 22.)

Secure in himself, Doeg would soon face destruction.

Secure in God, David would flourish in God’s presence.

We can wonder if Psalm 1 is also reflective of this episode. Refresh yourself with the first of this treasury of poems, praise, and prayers. Give attention again the bottom line in verse 6:

For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

It’s Monday, the head of the workweek. Which way will you go today? Which way will you follow day by day?

Will you live under God’s smile, or with a personal sneer which will run headlong into problems far too big for you to handle?

I will walk the way of the forever flourishing.

Our Father, set my steps in the right direction. Give me delight in knowing your truth and wisdom. Bring your words to mind again and again that I may ponder them and apply them appropriately. I want to live a fruitful day and an effective week. Amen.
