Even though he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him.
JOHN 12:37 (CSB)

—————————————————————————

After all Jesus had done, including raising Lazarus from the dead, many people still did not believe in him for who he was. Worse yet, “many did believe in him even among the rulers, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue,” (verse 42).

Bottom line? “For they loved human praise more than praise from God,” (verse 43).

We live in an interesting time. Many people say they do not care what anyone thinks about them and yet they carefully cultivate their appearance, their social media status, and more so that people will like them, really, really like them.

Truth and destiny take a back seat to popularity and position.

Going with the flow is easier than swimming against the tide.

Giving up is easier than staying in the game.

We do not have to give in to the encroaching darkness. Read verses 33-50. Listen to what Jesus says. Hear his declaration in verse 46: “I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me would not remain in darkness.”

There is light. There is life. There is destiny.

Jesus is the Light of the World.

Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life.

Jesus is the Way to the Father (John 14:6).

Sit with the self-centered sourpusses if you want, or go with Jesus.

Stay with those endlessly fascinated with themselves, or walk with Jesus along his path of adventure and meaning.

Soak up the acclaim of those who look down on everyone else, or look up to Jesus the Initiator and Perfector of all things.

I will live in the light of truth.

Our Father, it is hard for us to go against the flow. Give us strength. It is hard for us to swim against the tide. Empower us. Teach us your will. Show us your way. You know best. May we know you in ever-increasing wonder and delight. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 92:12-15

Psalm 92:12-15
The righteous thrive like a palm tree
and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
Planted in the house of the LORD,
they thrive in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
healthy and green,
to declare, “The LORD is just;
he is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in him.”

Daily D – Matthew 22:15-17

Matthew 22:15-17 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap him by what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You don’t care what anyone thinks nor do you show partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

Daily D – Psalm 90:12

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.

Daily D – Matthew 17:1-9

Matthew 17:1-9 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified.
Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” When they looked up they saw no one except Jesus alone.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

Daily D – Matthew 15:34

Matthew 15:34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked them. “Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”
