It was popular theology during my university years that if a person memorized enough Bible verses, he or she would not sin. As someone who struggled at that time to memorize anything other than sports statistics, I can tell you that this might have been good advice, but it was at best unevenly applied in my life. 

Bible memorization is a good idea. It is not, however, a magic trick to prevent problems. It is instead a process to remember God’s perspective and a guide for how to respond faithfully in times of temptation and challenge. 

Look at the three main verbs in the translations and paraphrase of this verse. 

“I have treasured . . .”

“I have hidden . . .”

“I’ve banked . . .”

God’s words of truth and life bear significant value. They tell us how to live lives God can bless. They teach us how to protect our hearts and minds from lies. They show us how to join God in setting things right. They lead us into productive and effective decision-making.

It is not likely you will memorize a verse a day. How about a verse a week? Start by writing down the verse you want to remember on an index card. The act of physical writing sinks the words more deeply into your mind than typing in a word processor.

Read through the verse again and again emphasizing a different word each time. Read through the verse in the style of different media characters. Imitate their style and flow. Rehearse the verse morning, noon, and night. Place it on your bathroom mirror. Slip it into a pocket. Keep it handy. Let it provide direction for your prayers.
