He must increase, but I must decrease.
JOHN 3:30 (CSB)

—————————————————————————

Envy and rivalry are evidence of shallow souls.

There was depth and character to John the Baptizer. John the Apostle tells us in chapter one of this Gospel that,

“There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the light (see John 1:4, 5), so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world,” (1:6-9).

John the Baptizer did his job well. In John 1:19-36, we see the raison d’etre, his reason for being, his mission. He came to prepare the way for Jesus. He came to point people to Jesus. In verse 36 he said to two of his disciples, “Look, the Lamb of God!” Verse 37 gives us a turning point, a point of no return, a gateway into a different reality.

“The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.”

This brings us to chapter three. Verse 26 represents another turning point, a gateway into the next steps of this adventure.

“So they came to John and told him, ‘Rabbi, the one you testified about, and who as with you across the Jordan, is baptizing — and everyone is going to him.”

The best evidence yet of John’s depth of character and his sense of mission is now on full display. Far from envy, farther still from jealousy, he declares the fulfillment of his life purpose.

“No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’ He who has the bride is the groom. But the groom’s friend, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the groom’s voice. So this joy of mine is complete. He must increase, but I must decrease.”

He had come to bear witness to Jesus. He had come to prepare the way. He had come so that others would see Jesus for who he is and turn their hearts toward him. Talk about famous last words, these are some of the best ever.

If someone were to ask you if you are Team John or Team Jesus, know that John himself would say he is on Team Jesus. Join John in taking a good, long, admiring look at Jesus. He is Life. He is the Light of the World. He is the Lamb of God. He is our Savior.

Let’s join John in saying, “More Jesus, please.”

I will point people to Jesus.

—————————————————————————

Our Father, empower me to point people toward Jesus. May they see him for who he is. I want them to enjoy his goodness and grace, his joy and his salvation. Amen.

Daily D – Romans 15:5-6

Romans 15:5, 6 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that, with one mind and one voice, you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Daily D – Romans 12:1-2

Romans 12:1, 2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Daily D – Romans 10:11-13

Romans 10:11-13 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Daily D – Romans 8:1-2

Romans 8:1, 2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Daily D – Romans 5:1-2

Romans 5:1, 2 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
