Deuteronomy 23:4, 5  “For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.” (NIV)

Balaam was hired to curse Israel. God placed words of blessing in his mouth instead.

While those in the valley below were unaware of what was happening in the high hills above them, God was thwarting an attempt to bring curses upon them. (See Numbers 22-25 for the full story.)

Seven times Balaam blessed Israel with the words God placed in his mind and mouth. God protected his people as he said he would, as he always had, and as he always will. He did not, however, save them from themselves. Their outright rebellion cost the lives of many. (Find the details in Numbers 25.)

Why does God bless us in ways we are not even aware of? Verse 5 above tells us.

“However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.”

Consider this fact: God blesses you in many ways which you can count like the old song says. There are also blessings so mundane (food, water, air) that we seldom ponder their significance and presence. Additionally, there are blessings we will never know of until we all get to heaven, which is another fun song to sing, and not just on Sundays.

It’s Sunday, the day when Christians all over the world gather to worship. God-honoring worship remembers what God has done, gives thanks for God’s ongoing blessings and watchcare over us, and exalts him in praise for who he is.

How have you been blessed this past week? Make a list and give thanks.

What blessings from God will you ask for in prayer? Write them down.

What expectations do you anticipate as you prepare to adore him? Feel free to start now. You might even sing that song that is bigger and broader than Christmas, O come let us adore Him.

I will sing God’s praise and declare joyful thanks for his grace, mercy, kindness, and love.

Our Father, thank you for every unseen, unnoticed blessing. You intervene in ways we will never know. You provide protection we don’t know we need. You defend us against enemies unaware. You turn curses into blessings. Thank you. Amen.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 “The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Deuteronomy 17:16-20 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and **he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left.** Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 15:7

Deuteronomy 15:7 “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 13:4

Deuteronomy 13:4 “It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Deuteronomy 10:12, 13 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?”
