Psalm 57:7, 8 
“My heart is confident in you, O God;
my heart is confident.
No wonder I can sing your praises!
Wake up, my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp!
I will wake the dawn with my song.” (NLT)

“I’m ready, God, so ready, 
ready from head to toe, 
Ready to sing, ready to raise a tune: 
“Wake up, soul! 
Wake up, harp! wake up, lute!

King David could sing when an army pursued him and trapped him in a cave. Why could he sing? Verse 2 provides perspective: 

“I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.”

He was confident God had a purpose for his life and would fulfill it. He would bring David to a fit conclusion in his perfect timing and in a manner of his choosing. David’s part of the story was to live life, experience adventures, and speak the lines God gave him. 

David chose to live in sync with God’s purpose. Whatever God wanted, that is what he wanted, too. 

Remember this the next time you find yourself in a hole in the ground that is decidedly not a Hobbit hole. This is no comfortable hole with a well-provisioned pantry. David’s hole was more fit for a latrine. (See 1 Samuel 24:3). 

Been there, done that? 

The good news is that the crappy position David was in was not the end of God’s purpose. What was the purpose of that stinking place? To display David’s character. 

He did not kill his adversary when he had the chance. He knew God had a purpose for him as well, and he would not take God’s purpose for King Saul into his hands any more than he would his own.

God’s purpose for David in the dark latrine was also to teach David God’s unfailing love and faithfulness. (See Psalm 57:3.) Notice how often David pairs these attributes of God in the psalms he wrote. Along with his perfect love that seeks the highest and best for us, God is forever faithful. He is never not loving. He is never not faithful. 

A God-confident heart sings praise; it does not resort to revenge, and it does not murder. 

No matter the stench of your circumstances, God can turn your despair into delight, your destiny into something beautiful and bright.

Our Father, thank you for preserving David’s stories. Guide us by your purpose in all of our adventures. Empower us to trust you in our darkest moments. Amen.
