Psalm 36:9
“For the wellspring of life is with you.
By means of your light we see light.” (CSB)

“For you are the fountain of life,
the light by which we see.” (NLT)

Here is a rich statement worth pondering throughout our day. We see with the eyes God gives us. We see by the light of his being and the light bearers of his creation. Every faculty, each native ability, is a gift of God’s unfailing love.

The first four verses of this psalm provide context for King David’s declarations about God in verses 5-9.

Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts.
They have no fear of God at all.
In their blind conceit, they cannot see how wicked they really are.
Everything they say is crooked and deceitful.
They refuse to act wisely or do good.
They lie awake at night, hatching sinful plots.
Their actions are never good.
They make no attempt to turn from evil.

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭36‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

People like the ones KD describes in these verses take God’s good gifts and misuse them with evil intent. Obviously, this is not how it should be. Naturally, this leads to harmful and hurtful behavior. Distressfully, this ends in many broken lives. This is a God-starved life, and the starvation is irrational and purposeful. But why starve yourself of God’s goodness? Why not use the faculties and abilities God gives to extend his goodness?

How good is our God? KD gives us a taste of glory in verses 5-9.

Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the ocean depths.
You care for people and animals alike, O Lord.
How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.
You feed them from the abundance of your own house,
letting them drink from your river of delights.
For you are the fountain of life,
the light by which we see.

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭36‬:‭5‬-‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God is love without limit, faithfulness without end, righteousness without comparison, and justice without fail. He is shelter and abundance. He is delight and the Light.

Awaken to glory. Awaken to unfailing love. Awaken in honesty, seeing God for who he is. Awaken in blessing, seeing us as his intended beneficiaries.

Psalms 33-36 ask, answer, and declare how great and how good is our God. These are songs worth singing. These are poems worth marking for future reference. These are wonderful words to commit to memory for those moments  when we need them most.

I will celebrate God’s greatness and his goodness.

Our Father, there is none like you. As we learned to pray at the dinner table when we were children, “God is great. God is good.” Every meal over the span of our lives shouts, “Amen!” Every morning after a good night’s rest agrees. Every day of meaningful activity joins with its assent. You are great, and you are good. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 92:12-15

Psalm 92:12-15
The righteous thrive like a palm tree
and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
Planted in the house of the LORD,
they thrive in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
healthy and green,
to declare, “The LORD is just;
he is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in him.”

Daily D – Matthew 22:15-17

Matthew 22:15-17 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap him by what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You don’t care what anyone thinks nor do you show partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

Daily D – Psalm 90:12

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.

Daily D – Matthew 17:1-9

Matthew 17:1-9 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified.
Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” When they looked up they saw no one except Jesus alone.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

Daily D – Matthew 15:34

Matthew 15:34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked them. “Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”
