Psalm 100
Let the whole earth shout triumphantly to the LORD!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
Acknowledge that the Lord is God.
He made us, and we are his—
his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name.
For the Lord is good, and his faithful love endures forever;
his faithfulness, through all generations. (CSB)

On your feet now—applaud GOD!
Bring a gift of laughter,
sing yourselves into his presence.
Know this: GOD is God, and God, GOD.
He made us; we didn’t make him.
We’re his people, his well-tended sheep.
Enter with the password: “Thank you!”
Make yourselves at home, talking praise.
Thank him. Worship him.
For GOD is sheer beauty,
all-generous in love,
loyal always and ever. (MSG)

I learned this psalm by heart earlier than any other. It was one of the first Bible passages I committed to memory. It’s a good one to know. Its treasures abound. It’s amazing how many times it has come to mind when I needed it most. Our Father in Heaven continues teaching me through its declarations and instructions.

Verse 3 is the heart of the song. It sings with an assuring voice,

Acknowledge that the LORD is God.
He made us, and we are his—
his people, the sheep of his pasture.

The Message paraphrases this so delightfully:

Know this: GOD is God, and God, GOD.
He made us; we didn’t make him.
We’re his people, his well-tended sheep.

Among the lessons here:
1. God is God, and I am not.
2. God created me; I did not make myself.
3. God is Creator; I am maker.
4. God is my shepherd. (Psalm 23:1; Luke 15:1-7)
5. God the Creator is God the Shepherd and I belong to him.

Do you know how many volumes of philosophy and theology this one verse clarifies?

Do you know how many volumes of philosophy and theology this one verse has inspired?

Which point is your favorite?

Which point will you ponder today?

Which point will you add to these listed here?

I will ponder all that it means that God the Creator is God my Shepherd.

Our Father, thank you for a simple song that says so much. Thank you for uncomplicated truth. Thank you for clarity for life. Thank you for meaning and purpose. Amen.

Daily D – Mark 9:33-37

Mark 9:33-37 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest. Sitting down, he called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.” He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but him who sent me.”
