Matthew 1:20, 21  But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (CSB)

God spoke to Joseph, like his Old Testament namesake, through dreams. Visions and dreams are powerful tools God uses to correct, to clarify, and to compel.

Joseph, the strong and silent sentry in nativity scenes, was considering how to break his betrothed estate with Mary after he discovered she was expecting a child who was not his. He did not want to humiliate Mary. He wanted to keep things as quiet and peaceful as possible.

This is when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and corrected his confusion. He and Mary each wondered, “How can this be?” Her question was innocent and shaped by wonder. His was grief-filled and shaped by loss. The angel’s message from the heart of God corrected their thinking and clarified God’s intentions.

God was moving into the neighborhood and renovating the whole world. Tears of shame, regret, and loss would be turned into tears of joy and gratitude. The gathering and deepening darkness would be overcome by an unquenchable flame.

God had a mission to initiate in the whole world, and Joseph and Mary were his chosen people to bring about this blessed beginning.

Joseph’s response is seen in his immediate obedience: “When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him,” (Matthew 1:24).

Mary’s response to God’s plan is heard in her tender acceptance: “See, I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it happen to me as you have said,” (Luke 1:38).

Corrected, clarified, and compelled, Joseph and Mary began the journey that defined their lives. They lived a life better than their dreams for themselves. They lived the life of God’s dreams for them. Heaven and earth still rejoice.

What is God’s dream for you?

I will seek God’s correction, clarification, and compelling plan for my life.

Our Father, I understand more of your will and ways than in my days now past. Please correct my confusion that I may know and experience you with greater clarity. What are your plans for my next steps? Please direct me onto and along that path. Amen.

Daily D – Job 8:2-7

Job 8:2-7
“How long will you go on like this?
You sound like a blustering wind.
Does God twist justice?
Does the Almighty twist what is right?
Your children must have sinned against him,
so their punishment was well deserved.
But if you pray to God
and seek the favor of the Almighty,
and if you are pure and live with integrity,
he will surely rise up and restore your happy home.
And though you started with little,
you will end with much.”

Daily D – Job 1:9-11

Job 1:9-11 Satan replied to the LORD, “Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God. You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is! But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!”

Daily D – Psalm 145:17

Psalm 145:17
The Lord is righteous in everything he does;
he is filled with kindness.

Daily D – Psalm 139:1-6

Psalm 139:1-6
O LORD, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, LORD.
You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

Daily D – Psalm 130

Psalm 130
From the depths of despair, O LORD,
I call for your help.
Hear my cry, O Lord.
Pay attention to my prayer.
