Luke 1:20  “Now listen. You will become silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.” (CSB)

Luke 1:31-33  “Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.” (CSB)

Luke 1:38  “See, I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it happen to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.” (CSB)

Luke 1:45  “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill what he has spoken to her!” (CSB)

Luke 1:63, 64  He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they were all amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God.” (CSB)

Yesterday was the first day I could attend worship live and in person since I had back surgery in July. I was physically able, and yet still unable to attend. One of the garage door springs broke, trapping our cars inside.

Fortunately, the garage door company we have used for many years sent a repairman through the rain this morning in time to raise the door and get my bride to work on time.

Sometimes, we experience delays along our journeys. Delays, however, are not necessarily denials.

Zechariah experienced a delay in declaring the good news of what he knew. His moment of disbelief left him in complete silence for nine very long months. Mary immediately experienced the joy of everything before her because she immediately believed.

We often delay joy by disobeying God immediately and wholeheartedly.

Jesus taught us to pray,

Your kingdom come,
Your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
(Matthew 6:10)

How is God’s will done in heaven? Immediately, wholeheartedly, joyfully, and completely. The best of all states of being and the best of all experiences is when God’s will is done God’s way in God’s timing.

Twice Gabriel said, “Now listen.” Both Zechariah and Mary listened. Mary immediately responded with committed belief. Zechariah couldn’t believe what he heard.

Zechariah’s long silence was broken not when his son was born but when he obediently wrote his correct name. What joy to tell the story he had long kept locked within his God-imposed, God-removed silence!

Hearing and obeying God is life’s most important lesson. Listen carefully. Obey immediately. Experience the joy set before you as God planned long before you were born.

The whole world needs the joy of your obedience. Initiate the blessing now.

I will learn to hear God and obey him as fast as I can.

Our Father, please give me a willing and obedient heart. Whatever you ask, whatever you command, my answer is Yes. Let the joy begin! Amen.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 “The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 23:4-5

Deuteronomy 23:4, 5 “For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Deuteronomy 17:16-20 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and **he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left.** Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 15:7

Deuteronomy 15:7 “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 13:4

Deuteronomy 13:4 “It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.”
