1 Corinthians 8:1-3
Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “we all have knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone thinks he knows anything, he does not yet know it as he ought to know it. But if anyone loves God, he is known by him. (CSB)

The question keeps coming up regarding meat that has been offered up to an idol: Should you attend meals where such meat is served, or not? We sometimes tend to think we know all we need to know to answer these kinds of questions—but sometimes our humble hearts can help us more than our proud minds. We never really know enough until we recognize that God alone knows it all. (The Message)

Humble hearts help us more than proud minds. Being known by God is far superior to thinking we know it all.

If you have a choice between being known as the smartest person in the room or the humblest person in the room, choose humility. Let everyone else jockey for the Smartypants Seat.

Humility doesn’t compete. Humility serves.

Humility doesn’t throw its weight around; instead, it applies it when and where it is most needed.

Humility listens long and seeks deeper understanding. It speaks when necessary and helpful. It is not compelled to be heard.

Knowing God alone knows it all and loves each of us individually and perfectly, we can dismiss the need to be in charge. God doesn’t require our assent or assistance to accomplish his purposes. He uses humble people rather than all-knowing people because the humble seek his will and ways rather than their own.

God’s will done God’s way in God’s timing produces God’s results which are superior to any we could think up or dream.

Humility is a stress reliever. When Bossypants and Smartypants argue and jostle for preeminence, humble souls pray, wait their turn, and work for peace. God still blesses peacemakers (Matthew 5:9).

Trust God to know it all. Humble yourself under his mighty hand (1 Peter 5:6). Listen up. Pray up. Shut up. Find a way to serve. This may not solve every problem, but it will prevent more from developing unnecessarily.

I will choose humility.

Our Father, please deliver me from the Bossypants and Smartypants seats. Empower me to choose the place of humility and the posture of service. Use me to bring peace. Give me ears to hear beyond what is said. Give me the wisdom to turn every issue into prayer. Empower me to hold my tongue. Remind me to trust you in all things. Amen.
