Daily D – Luke 23:44-45

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three, because the sun’s light failed.
LUKE 23:44-45 (CSB)

The light from the sun was gone. (NLT)

Clint Eastwood in the movie Unforgiven utters this unforgettable line:

“It’s a hell of a thing killin’ a man. You take away everything he ever had and ever would have.”

John 1:9 says, “The true light that gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”

Now the light was extinguished.

It was a hell of a thing.

Darkness reigned.

How, then, can we call that Friday Good?

John telegraphed the end of this story from the beginning.

“In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it,” (1:4, 5).

The darkness of death was about to go out. The Light of the World was about to shine again. The death of Jesus turned out the light of sin’s reign. The light of God’s forgiveness was about to shine without fail forevermore. That is why we call that Friday, and this one, Good.

Darkness reigns for the moment. Light reigns forever.

Sunday is coming.

I will wait for the light.

Our Father, into my darkness, shine. Amen.
