Learning is like earning. The more we learn, the more we have to share. The more we earn, the more we have to share. Knowledge, wisdom, and wonder are to be generously expressed. The ideal is not to become the World’s Foremost Expert in a particular subject, but to become the World’s Foremost Distributor of what we know that may well change someone’s perspective or productivity. 

We are to live generously with everything we receive. 

This past week was pretty miserable for most Texans. The HEB grocery store in Leander was packed with people stocking up on bread, milk, bottled water, toilet paper, and all the other essentials of life. Then the electricity went out. There was a collective groan throughout the store. 

The store manager had a moment to make a big, big decision. He told shoppers to take what they needed. No charge. Here’s what happened next: People began paying it forward. Able-bodied men and women helped those who were physically infirm carry their groceries to their cars across the snow and ice. Shopping carts left in the parking lot were rounded up. People behaved in an orderly and respectful manner. 

I was on my way to lead training for a church staff one morning when I stopped at Tom Thumb to pick up some mints and chocolates to put on the tables where participants would sit. Having only a few items, I chose the Self Checkout lane. After I scanned my items and bagged them, I ran my credit card through the machine, and at that precise moment, all of the registers in the store died. 

Again, there was a collective groan from the early-morning shoppers. The manager looked at us and said, “Take your groceries and don’t worry about it.” Each of us protested his largesse. He insisted. I returned to the store later in the day with the empty bags to scan the codes and pay for the items. 

Live generously with your financial capability. Live generously with your knowledge and wisdom. Live generously with everything you have, with all that you are. The Giver of All Good Things wants to make us channels of blessings, not reservoirs of resources. Live in the flow of the Spirit of God. Be in the moment with our gracious and generous God.
