Daily D – Psalm 143:11-12
Psalm 143:11, 12
For your name’s sake, LORD, preserve my life;
in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.
In your unfailing love, silence my enemies;
destroy all my foes,
for I am your servant. (NIV)

In our ongoing quest to learn how to pray as we ought, these two verses offer important insights.
We can focus on what David asked for, and that’s good, but more importantly, we should focus on the basis for his request.
What was David depending on for God to say yes to his prayer? Was it his present need? Was it a future opportunity?
Psalm 23 helps us understand this part of Psalm 143. The second part of 23:3 says, “He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” God’s nature and character are on the line in how he guides us. Because this is true and because God is who he is, because he is perfectly trustworthy in all things at all times, David can say, “You’re always going to lead me on the right path.”
Likewise, in Psalm 143:11, he leans into God’s trustworthy, dependable character. How can he confidently ask God to preserve his life? Because he is the LORD. He is Israel’s covenant God. He rescued them from Egypt, gave them the Promised Land, and brought them to this place in time where they were united under one king from whose line the Messiah would come.
David was wholeheartedly participating in God’s purpose and plans not only for this nation but for the whole world. He lived with a greater purpose. He lived a life bigger than his own. He could trust God that whatever he brought him to, he would also bring him through.
David leaned on God’s eternal purpose for his immediate need.
He then asked God to bring him out of trouble in his righteousness. That word righteousness includes the ideas of justice and faithfulness. This is no random problem David is facing. This is something significant, brought on by another’s injustice or lack of faithfulness to God’s nature and character.
David aligned himself with God’s straight edge to overcome the problem that threatened to detour his people on their pathway to God’s preferred future.
Next, he depended on God’s unfailing love to deliver him from trouble. God’s perfect love brought him to this place. It was God’s perfect love that would lead him into fulfilling his purpose. Therefore, David could confidently ask, in that moment, that God’s unfailing love would silence his enemies.
He asked God to destroy all his foes. The best way for you and me to get rid of our enemies is to turn them into friends. However, David was king of a nation where other kings and other nations wanted him dead. People in his own administration wanted to usurp his authority and take over the kingdom. Such a move would not only end with an assassination and all the turmoil associated with it, but it would also derail God’s eternal plans. That’s why David’s prayer sounds a little different from ours.
When David asked God to silence his enemies and destroy all his foes, they weren’t David’s enemies and foes alone. They were God’s. They opposed God. They opposed God’s purpose.
David passionately prayed, not merely for his safety, but for the triumph of God’s purpose then and forever.
David’s bottom-line statement, “for I am your servant,” is no mere tagline. God called him, equipped him, and placed him. He lived for an eternal purpose. He knew he belonged to God and was carrying out God’s plans.
David stepped up to and into God’s design for his life.
We pray differently when we understand God’s purpose for our lives. We pray with greater clarity and focus when we wholeheartedly embrace what God wants to do in us and through us.
How has God designed you? Who can help you clarify his purpose for your life?
What does his purpose make possible?
What does his purpose lead you to say yes and no to?

I will pray in line with God’s purpose for my life.

Our Father, teach me to pray in alignment with your purpose for my life. Teach me to pray in line with your clear direction for my life. Teach me to pray passionately for your purpose for this whole world. Teach me to seek your will and your ways, your strength and courage, for what you have designed me to accomplish. Amen.
