Psalm 25:14
The LORD confides in those who fear him;
he makes his covenant known to them. (NIV)

The LORD is a friend to those who fear him.
He teaches them his covenant. (NLT)

God-friendship is for God-worshipers;
They are the ones he confides in. (MSG)

There was a song about twenty years ago that contemporary-worship churches sang nearly every Sunday for a very long time. It was played on Christian radio every hour. It’s a great song, especially the first hundred times you sing it.

[Verse]
Who am I that You are mindful of me
That You hear me when I call
Is it true that You are thinking of me
How You love me it’s amazing

[Chorus]
I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
He calls me friend

[Bridge]
God Almighty, Lord of Glory
You have called me friend

Today’s verse has been around longer, has been spoken, has been preached, and sung for nearly three thousand years. It has been set to different musical expressions throughout church history.

There is deep truth in this verse. There is wonderful delight for those who read it afresh from time to time. This is an encouraging word. This verse puts strength in our spines and delight in our hearts. It’s worth memorizing and reflecting on often.

Who can God trust with deep truths?

Who can God rely on to put into practice what he teaches?

Who does he speak to most regularly?

God entrusts deeper truths to those who do what he says.

God empowers for significance those who hear and obey.

God speaks to those who are ready to hear his words of truth and life, and ready to move at the impulse of his love.

It’s high time some of us move beyond knowledge of God in favor of the kind of rapport where he can reliably speak to our hearts knowing we already agree with everything he says and anything he asks.

Singing “I am a friend of God” takes on a whole new meaning when we move into God’s confidence.

I will be a person God can confide in.

Our Father, I lean in to listen to whatever you want to say to me. Show me the way I should go. Place your thoughts in my mind, and your words in my mouth. Draw me ever closer to your loving heart and your creative mind. Amen.

Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by daybreak.”
