I am a man in need of a vacation. It just so happens that we are leaving Saturday for a week away. We will lounge in the sight of water and mountains several time zones away. We will enjoy leisurely walks and frequent naps. 

Two years ago, we vacationed in the same area. Since we were several time zones away, our then one-year-old granddaughter awoke uncharacteristically early for the time zone we were in, but right on time for the time zone in which we reside. I also could not sleep past my normal getting-up time. 

The two of us watched the moon sink into the ocean as the sun arose from the other side of the island. We observed the stars in their courses above bed down for the day. Birds lingered upon the breeze in slow motion transit toward who knows what. Every breaking wave, as U2 sings, reminded us there would be one more. 

Shades of blue compete for supremacy. Green palm leaves wave their greetings. Clouds color skies with hues so unique they defy labels. 

Our granddaughter and I sat and noticed every little thing in perfect peace for hours at a time. She’s almost three now and has a baby sister. The three of us may gather coffee, juice, and milk in hands to awaken the dawn together. 

Laughter will heal wounds. Exploration will strengthen souls. The peaceful nature of that place and the treasure of these companions will provide the renewal I need. Anticipation makes me wait, as Carly sang so well. It also reminds me that some things are worth waiting for. 

Psalm 23 is God’s song for every season of our lives. Isn’t it interesting how the first thing it says after declaring who God is, what he is like, and how he relates to us is about rest? He begins his guidance with the security of his ever-present reality combined with the soul restoration we require before we take our first step. 

“He makes me lie down.” 

We live, work, and play at our best from a place of quiet rest. 

When is your next day off?

When are you vacationing?

When will you take an untimed nap?

When will you sleep without an alarm?

Our Father, thank you for soul restoration. Thank you for making us lie down. Thank you for places of exquisite beauty. Thank you for children who stimulate laughter and love. Thank you for loving us so completely. Amen.
