Psalm 131
Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always. (NLT)

A person who is maturing spiritually demonstrates certain characteristics. King David names some of these in this psalm.

First, he says he does not have a proud heart. He does not behave arrogantly.

Second, he doesn’t butt in where he doesn’t belong. He doesn’t pretend to know more than he does.

Third, he calms himself into peace. He doesn’t have to be the center of attention. He does not impulsively grasp for whatever he wants.

How can he live like this when he is the king, when people are well-positioned to serve his every need and desire? There is no need to grab, take, and make a fuss when we remember who is in charge here. We can trust God from the bottom of our hearts now and always. Our demeanor and manner of life ought to reflect this reality.

Short, sweet, and to the point. That’s good teaching.

I will avoid command and control, pretend and demand living.

Our Father, teach us the blessing of humility, the benefit of silence, and the solace of restraint. Amen.
