2 Corinthians 9:7
Each person should do as he has decided in his heart — not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. (CSB)

Remember: A stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop. I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give. That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving. (The Message)

My phone’s vibration alerted me to an incoming call. The number was not one I recognized. Answering it, I was immediately addressed by name by a professional fundraiser with an urgent and breathless request.

You know how this story goes. You cannot respond without sounding or feeling impolite. You listen far longer than necessary. You feel guilty when you let the person know you cannot assist at this time.

These verses in 2 Corinthians were written for you. If you cannot give to a particular cause with intentional cheerfulness, don’t give. There are a million good causes in the world. Each cause has its own pitch. They all sound urgent, and many truly are. However, the resources God gives us are to be stewarded wisely and thoughtfully.

The guidance we receive in the Bible about giving provides a helpful order to our giving. Give first to the church you attend. Second-level gifts should go to ministries closely related to your church, like mission agencies and community ministries. Third-level gifts go to those that are meaningful to you because they impact those you love or choose to serve.

Plan your giving. Live generously. The only way to live generously and to give strategically over a lifetime is to say no to just about every unsolicited appeal. In the exceptions, make sure what you give to help is really helpful.

It’s hard to say no to urgent appeals. This is how you do it: “I will not be able to give to this cause because I have other giving priorities.” Please keep it simple and respectful. Remember, our cheerful giving to particular recipients makes us kind toward those we deny.

I will give cheerfully and obediently where it does the most good.

Our Father, make us ever more extravagant and strategic in our giving. Show us how to give in a manner that honors you and serves others. Amen.

Psalm 141:3, 4
“Take control of what I say, O LORD,
and guard my lips.
Don’t let me drift toward evil
or take part in acts of wickedness.
Don’t let me share in the delicacies
of those who do wrong.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 32:38-41

Jeremiah 32:38-41 “They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 29:11-14

Jeremiah 29:11-14 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.”

Daily D – Psalm 138:1-3

Psalm 138:1-3
“I give you thanks, O LORD, with all my heart;
I will sing your praises before the gods.
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship.
I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness;
for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.
As soon as I pray, you answer me;
you encourage me by giving me strength.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 23:18

Jeremiah 23:18 “Have any of these prophets been in the Lord’s presence to hear what he is really saying? Has even one of them cared enough to listen?”
