Luke 12:4-7  “I say to you, my friends, don’t fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will show you the one to fear: Fear him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear! Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (CSB)

It’s Sunday, just over a month from Election Day, and the blessed end of all of those terrible television commercials proclaiming the end of the world if the other guy or gal gets elected. That’s something to look forward to, now isn’t it?

There’s better news than that. Read Luke 12:4-7 again. Here is my early-morning summary of this text: God is more interested in saving you than searing you.

Death is real.

Hell is real.

God’s love is bigger, better, and broader than both.

Fear hell if you somehow think it’s a party with all your departed friends. The Bible makes it clear that hell is a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth. It’s the place where the good times are over for good. It is the place of eternal regret. It’s the one place you will ever be where God’s goodness is completely absent and unavailable. Trust Jesus on this: There are no friends in hell.

Also, heaven begins with the greatest party possible and this party never ends. Laughter is the language of heaven. Tear ducts are dry and unnecessary. Joy pervades every heart and all things. The good times roll on forever!

Trust Jesus on this truth as well: Our Father in Heaven has no intention of sending you there. He wants you with him forever. He has made a way for you to know and experience him now and beyond this age. You don’t have to fear hell if you trust him. Jesus says quite clearly here, “Don’t be afraid.” God knows you, loves you, and is drawing you to himself.

Believe it or not, that’s better than the end of the election cycle—way better. Election year is time-limited. Heaven is the Best It Has Ever Been and the Best It Could Ever Be with the time factor removed.

God’s bigger, better, broader love is reaching for you and those you love today to hold you in an eternal embrace. God doesn’t want to sear you; he wants to save you. Ask him for this gift so grand and this life so good.

I will celebrate God for his reaching and saving love.

Our Father, thank you for delighting in saving our souls and welcoming us to your party. You are better to us than we would be to ourselves. May your perfect love drive out every fear of our lives today. Amen.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 “The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 23:4-5

Deuteronomy 23:4, 5 “For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Deuteronomy 17:16-20 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and **he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left.** Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 15:7

Deuteronomy 15:7 “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 13:4

Deuteronomy 13:4 “It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.”
