Psalm 92:12-15
The righteous thrive like a palm tree
and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
Planted in the house of the LORD,
they thrive in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
healthy and green,
to declare, “The LORD is just;
he is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in him.” (CSB)

Psalm 92:12-14
“Good people will prosper like palm trees,
Grow tall like Lebanon cedars;
transplanted to GOD’s courtyard,
They’ll grow tall in the presence of God,
lithe and green, virile still in old age.” (MSG)

John 15:5
“I am the vine; you are the branches.
The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit,
because you can do nothing without me.” (CSB)

Back in the 1970s, Minute Maid came out with a juice blend called Five Alive. I liked it. It was obviously healthy since it was a blend of fruit juices. Also, it contained high fructose corn syrup and twenty-seven grams of sugar. It’s still available in Canada but no longer in the USA.

As it turns out, a juice box is not the secret elixir of life. An article messed up another part of my healthy breakfast when it declared that eating an orange is much more beneficial than drinking orange juice. Some people want to take all the joy out of life.

It appears whoever wrote this anonymous psalm was leaning into his latter years. His concern was staying fresh with God. He found the secret of aging well, which had nothing to do with juice boxes. He discovered how, even in his years of diminishing physical strength, his spiritual capacities were developing with unending freshness.

Twice in this text, as translated by the Christian Standard Bible, we are told the righteous thrive in old age. They still bear fruit. They are healthy and green. The Message paraphrase says, “They’ll grow tall in the presence of God, lithe and green, virile still in old age.”

I like these descriptive words. I hope someday someone will use these descriptors when talking about you and me. Jesus teaches us how to make it so. Look at John 15:5:

“I am the vine; you are the branches.
The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit,
because you can do nothing without me.”

A deep and abiding relationship with Jesus keeps us fresh, lithe, green, and virile even in old age. Diminishing physical capacities cannot stop our spiritual vitality. I heard someone say that we are at our physical peak in heaven. That may or may not be true. I really don’t think we will be that concerned with such matters then. However, those with the greatest capacity to enjoy all of God’s wonders will be those who continue deepening their roots and strengthening their connections with Jesus now.

Today is a good day to live a life deeply rooted in Jesus. Let’s grow ever greener together.

I will live deeply-rooted in Jesus so that I may thrive now and forever.

Our Father, cultivate in us the kind of life that thrives now and forever. Keep us healthy and green, lithe and virile, thriving in every season. Increase our capacity for deep relationship with you even as our other abilities diminish. Fit us for maximum enjoyment of heaven’s glories. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 141:3-4

Psalm 141:3, 4
“Take control of what I say, O LORD,
and guard my lips.
Don’t let me drift toward evil
or take part in acts of wickedness.
Don’t let me share in the delicacies
of those who do wrong.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 32:38-41

Jeremiah 32:38-41 “They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 29:11-14

Jeremiah 29:11-14 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.”

Daily D – Psalm 138:1-3

Psalm 138:1-3
“I give you thanks, O LORD, with all my heart;
I will sing your praises before the gods.
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship.
I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness;
for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.
As soon as I pray, you answer me;
you encourage me by giving me strength.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 23:18

Jeremiah 23:18 “Have any of these prophets been in the Lord’s presence to hear what he is really saying? Has even one of them cared enough to listen?”
