Matthew 14:6-12  When Herod’s birthday celebration came, Herodias’s daughter danced before them and pleased Herod. So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she answered, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.” Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests. So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. Then his disciples came, removed the corpse, buried it, and went and reported to Jesus. (CSB)

A gutless king made an offer he couldn’t rescind to an entertaining temptress, leaving a prophet headless.

Drunken men leering and lusting after a teenage dancer is bad form, leading to worse results.

Herod made a promise he had to keep. His stepdaughter danced a dance so provocative that he outspoke his intention. His wife made a demand he could not honorably refuse.

An innocent man, a man of God’s own choosing, was brutally murdered as a result of the deadly combination of too much wine, too much temptation, and too much bold talk.

Drunken leaders lead in the wrong direction.

Lustful leaders grasp for what is entirely off limits.

Brash leaders give away more than planned and lose more than they can recoup.

And some people say the Bible isn’t relevant.

I will learn all the lessons of Herod’s terrible example.

Our Father, deliver me from drunkenness, sexual temptation, and brash declarations. Save me from harming myself. Protect me from causing unnecessary harm to others. Amen.
