Daily D – Matthew 7:7-12
Matthew 7:7-12 “Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Who among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him. Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (CSB)

Our local granddaughter and I shared two bananas yesterday. She likes bananas, and I like bananas. Sometimes, we go bananas for bananas.
How could you not share a banana when asked to do so by a tiny tot so adorable and fun?
Jesus talks about moments like this in these verses. He talks about our Father in Heaven as the Giver of All Good Things. He compares and contrasts us with God. He tells us to ask God for what we need when we need it. (See 6:9-13.) He tells us that as good as we are at taking care of our children and grandchildren, our Father in Heaven is even better at taking care of us.
Because of God’s nature and character, we have the freedom to live with open hands instead of closed fists. We don’t have to live lives of grabbing and grasping. We can trust God as our Provider.
Consider the effect of handing a child a banana she asked for. Think about the delight in sitting together and enjoying something as simple as a banana. Tender moments like these bring out so many smiles and so much affection. Bonding over bananas is not to be underestimated.
It’s good to remember on Mondays, and the other six days of the week, that God loves us more than we can imagine, he provides more than we can measure, he is more dependable and trustworthy than even the most loving parent on earth.
It’s good to remember that no matter what we face this week, God’s goodness and provision are in place for each issue, problem, and opportunity. This is not only good to remember, but it is also worth pondering. What does this make possible? Indeed, what is impossible when we seek to honor God and serve others?

Our Father, you are the Giver of All Good Things. You have enriched us beyond kings of old. You are more generous with us than we would be with ourselves. Empower us to enjoy the opportunities before us to enrich others with your abundant, overflowing goodness. May we live under your smile the way our little ones live under ours. Amen.
