Micah 6:8
Mankind, he has told each of you what is good
and what it is the Lord requires of you:
to act justly,
to love faithfulness,
and to walk humbly with your God. (CSB)

But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do,
what God is looking for in men and women.
It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor,
be compassionate and loyal in your love,
And don’t take yourself too seriously—
take God seriously. (MSG)

The bottom line to a better world is found in the bottom line of The Message paraphrase of this verse: “And don’t take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.”

Take God seriously.

Every day, we have the choice, every moment in fact, to decide who gets to decide — us or God. This should not be a hard choice. The conclusion should be apparent. Yet somehow, I have rationalized exceptions to the rule, alternate outcomes, even truly fantastical courses of action. The one thing all of my better ideas have in common is that none of them were better ideas.

God always has the better idea.

Humility turns out to be kindness to ourselves and for others.

Seeing God for who he is and ourselves in proper relation to him smooths out a whole lotta bumps.

Sometimes, the best lessons are the simplest. It doesn’t get simpler than this:

Do what is fair and just to your neighbor,
be compassionate and loyal in your love,
And don’t take yourself too seriously—
take God seriously.

Simple stuff, and yet profound.

Truly simple and forever life-changing.

God is fair and just. He is compassionate and loves us without limit. We get to live like him. We get to prescribe for ourselves and others the formula for a better life.

I will live a fair and just, compassionate and loving, God-exalting life.

Our Father, I want to live a fair and just, compassionate and loving, life that exalts you. As much as I want this to become my everyday reality, I know it is a lot easier to write this sitting here in my chair than it will be when I go downstairs, drive to work, and meet with people all day long. Please help me to live my intentions with your strength, your endurance, and your grace. I will most certainly fail otherwise. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 106:1-3

Psalm 106:1-3
Praise the LORD!
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
Who can list the glorious miracles of the LORD?
Who can ever praise him enough?
There is joy for those who deal justly with others
and always do what is right.

Daily D – Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 103:1-5
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
He forgives all my sins
and heals all my diseases.
He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender mercies.
He fills my life with good things.
My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

Daily D – Psalm 92:4

Psalm 92:4
“You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!
I sing for joy because of what you have done.”

Daily D – Psalm 86:5-7

Psalm 86:5-7
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O LORD;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.

Daily D – Psalm 84:5-7

Psalm 84:5-7
And how blessed all those in whom you live,
whose lives become roads you travel;
They wind through lonesome valleys, come upon brooks,
discover cool springs and pools brimming with rain!
God-traveled, these roads curve up the mountain,
and at the last turn—Zion! God in full view!
