1 Kings 4:29-34  God gave Solomon wisdom, very great insight, and understanding as vast as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone  — wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, sons of Mahol. His reputation extended to all the surrounding nations.

Solomon spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs numbered 1,005. He spoke about trees, from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop growing out of the wall. He also spoke about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish. Emissaries of all peoples, sent by every king on earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom. (CSB)

Knowledge and wisdom without self-discipline lead to extravagant accumulation that turns into waste.

Solomon was wise. Solomon was productive. Solomon was better with other people’s problems than with his own. He could reduce other people’s situations to simple conclusions within minutes. He compounded his own mistakes over decades.

One of the most important lessons of Solomon’s life is the high value of finishing well, which he didn’t. Proverbially, finishing well is superior to starting well.

Solomon was effective, but not efficient.

Solomon was magnificent, but not great.

Solomon had a mind as deep and wide as the whole world, but his heart was set fully on himself.

Look and learn. Do not rinse and repeat.

I will cultivate a heart for God and honor him with all I have.

Our Father, you have all the wisdom I need. I turn to you. You have all the resources I require. I depend on you. I am a poor judge of what is best for me. I trust you to do what is right, just, fair, and compassionate. Amen.

Turn back and live!”
