1 Samuel 10:5-7
“After that you will come to Gibeah of God where there are Philistine garrisons. When you arrive at the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place prophesying. They will be preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres. The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully on you, you will prophesy with them, and you will be transformed. When these signs have happened to you, do whatever your circumstances require because God is with you.” (CSB)
“Next, you’ll come to Gibeah of God, where there’s a Philistine garrison. As you approach the town, you’ll run into a bunch of prophets coming down from the shrine, playing harps and tambourines, flutes and drums. And they’ll be prophesying. Before you know it, the Spirit of God will come on you and you’ll be prophesying right along with them. And you’ll be transformed. You’ll be a new person! “When these confirming signs are accomplished, you’ll know that you’re ready: Whatever job you’re given to do, do it. God is with you!“ (MSG)

True transformation truly transforms us.
Have you ever noticed how the New Testament doesn’t call followers of Jesus Christians? Instead, they are often called saints.
The old priest imprisoned next to the man who would become the Count of Monte Cristo said to him, “I’m a priest; not a saint.” It’s a funny line, one the Count himself adapts for himself later in the book and movie.
When God looks at us through the lens of what Jesus has done for us through his sinless life, his death on the cross, his rising from the dead, and his ascension to the right hand of the Father, he sees us as the finished product he always knew we could become. He calls us saints. He anticipates his goodness fully applied, received, and employed in our lives. (See Ephesians 2:10 and 3:14-21.)
God truly transforms everyone who yields to his hand. He is the Potter; we are the clay. He is making masterpieces out of us, out of mortal creatures taken from and destined toe return to dust. (See 2 Corinthian 4:7-18.)
When God saw Saul, he saw who he could become when he listened carefully to what he said and put his instructions into practice. Saul started well. Then he tried to do God’s will his way. Then he stopped listening to God altogether. He lived a destructive life. He died in a disaster of his own making.
An important note for this season of American life is found here. When Saul lived a life of focused worship, he led with integrity. When worship ended, he led with increasing paranoia. Every leader we consider for elected office needs to be seen through this lens. Regardless of whether he or she labels himself or herself a Christian, what evidence is there of true transformation?
A truly transformed King Saul, who was empowered by the Holy Spirit was told, “Whatever job you’re given to do, do it. God is with you!” (The Message) The Christian Standard Bible translates it this way:
“When these signs have happened to you, do whatever your circumstances require because God is with you.”
God-empowered, God-centered leaders are worth following. Live a God-empowered, God-centered, saint-in-progress life. Do whatever the circumstances require wherever you are. This is similar to what God said to Abraham in Genesis 17:1:
“I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.”
(New American Standard Bible 2020).
Live a life of worship.
Live a life overflowing with God’s word of truth and life.
Live in step with God’s clear directions.
Live a truly transformed life.

Our Father, empower me as you empowered Saul. Empower me to live a life of worship. Empower me to live a truly transformed life. Empower me to do whatever the circumstances demand wherever I am. Amen.
