Daily D – Judges 6:14-16

Judges 6:14-16 The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and deliver Israel from the grasp of Midian. I am sending you!” He said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Look, my family is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s family.” “But I will be with you,” the Lord said to him. “You will strike Midian down as if it were one man.” (CSB)

Where God guides, God provides. In the case of Gideon, God provided his presence and all the strength that entails.

The Angel of the LORD told Gideon, “Go in the strength you have and deliver Israel from the grasp of Midian. I am sending you!”

God commissioned Gideon: “I am sending you!” The ninety-pound weakling immediately crawfished. His family was the weakest in the land, and he was the youngest of his brothers. It appears God agreed with him. In fact, he may have chosen him in large part because he was a ninety-pound weakling.

God can do more through a ninety-pound weakling than the most gifted athlete. How? That’s what Gideon wanted to know. Maybe you wonder how in the world God could use you to carry out his mission in this word.

“I will be with you,” the LORD said to him.

Those words probably sound familiar. God has been saying those words for ages past. Jesus made the same promise to his followers, and to us. After examining all the evidence across the ages, the Apostle Paul wrote, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (See Romans 8:31 and following.)

When we live out the mission God has for our lives, when we accept his purpose and adjust our plans accordingly, we discover we have all we need when we need it to help people see how good God is.

What does it make possible that God is with us?

What does it make possible that we are living on mission?

What it makes possible is what we see in Gideon’s story and in our own. Again, Romans 8 is helpful. Verse 37 says,

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Here is God’s promise for you: You are more than a conqueror. Everything that is too big for you is no problem for God. He is with you. He is for you. He wants everyone you meet to see how good he is through your life.

Hard moments may lie ahead. Remember what God says: “I am with you.” How could you lose?

Our Father, please forgive me for ignoring your presence so often. Awaken me today to your immediate reality and wonder. Strengthen me for all you call me to be and to do. Use me to bless your world. Amen.

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 “The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 23:4-5

Deuteronomy 23:4, 5 “For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Deuteronomy 17:16-20 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and **he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left.** Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.
